Re: Essendon list changes

Further to Lance's argument.

Look at current list of tall forwards

Neagle - Doubt he will make it.
Carlisle - Will be a very good player/maybe dominant - but another two years away
Gumbleton - Still developing and plays away from goal

Hope that C.Daniher can get fit - Appeals as a lead up forward who can run both ways. He may add balance to the forward line.

Not a lot ready to kick goals.

Mark Williams could kick 50 in a season. Hopefully he can have a big pre season. I imagine he's the type of play Hird would rate.

Re: Essendon list changes

Hurley is a defender, he only played forward when Essendon was short in this area.

Seriously though, Matthew Lloyd is adamant Hurley's best spot is CHB, he says Hurley just doesn't have the natural goal sense of a champion forward. (Lloyd also makes the same criticism of Gumbleton).

If Lloyd said this I have lost all respect for him as a thinker of the game.

Re: Essendon list changes

1) Happens every year, mostly for rookie positions but Rodan trained one year, same as Barlow last year.

2) I dont even know what this means. Im assuming your talking after the rookie draft which is a different topic.

Point 2

The last rookie position is filled a week before the beginning of the season - It is set aside from the rookie draft.

Re: Essendon list changes

We're getting Chris daniher back?!

My hope is that D.Daniher can find from - I see him pushing Monfries out of the team in a perfect world.

Re: Essendon list changes

Keep your respect intact, he has said at least 2-3 times on SEN that he sees Hurley as our most natural forward and should be left to develop there.

Re: Essendon list changes

This is why I kind of hope we get darling. He looks like he would be the perfect 3rd tall behind gumby and Carlisle or maybe 2nd if one of them fail.

But the other factor is, is there still going to be room for a 3rd tall because of rule changes because the resting ruckman will be there.

But either way I think we will need to take a tall/ utility in this draft somewhere and IMO hopefully it's darling because he are really missing that perfect utility that darling maybe be able to become.

I think he will have a pretty big role next season (provided he stays fit). I'm VERY interested to see what Hirdy and Co.'s plans are for him... Deep forward in some capacity, hopefully.

Re: Essendon list changes

It will be interesting to see what the list management team will do with pick 8.

Will they go for needs ( mid ) or best available.

Do they rate Gorringe or Darling in the top 5/10 and therofore choose them over a pure midfielder.

I am thinking that if they dont go for a pure midfielder at 8 - Darling would be the risk/reward selection.

Re: Essendon list changes

why we delisted tyson slattery has me dumb founded?? did they confuse him with henry? henry should be the one gone

Re: Essendon list changes

I don't know where you heard that but Lloyd has repeatedly stated on SEN that he sees Hurley as our most "natural" forward and would play him there without a doubt.

Lloyd? No way. Dermott Brereton bangs on about Hurley being moved forward all the time and Lloyd says CHB is his best position, and that he is not a natural goalkicker.

If the club is confident of landing Joe Daniher I can't see why we'd select Darling, at least with our first pick. I can see the logic in choosing Gorringe as he is by far the best ruck prospect in this draft. I can't see any logic in choosing Darling when Gumby and Carlisle are developing up there.

Re: Essendon list changes

Towno78

OK, here is something for you to ponder/ or anyone else for that matter.

These are the players out of contract: (age/games played also)

Atkinson, Jarrod, 25 years old, 17 games
Lonergan, Samuel, 23 years old, 53 games

Crameri, Stuart, 22 years old, 3 games
Marigliani, Marcus, 25 years old, 2 games
Quinn, Michael, 20 years old, 8 games
Silverlock, Tait, 20 years old, yet to debut

So with this in mind, what do you expect us to do?

We currently are taking 3 picks in the ND (Still, Slattery and Laycock) with the addition of Houli allowing for the elevation of Howlett, and two picks (Bock and J.Williams) in the rookie draft.

Also, bearing in mind that Essendon FC will be adding David Meli to our list as an international scholarship holder outside the primary list.

I am slowly starting to come around to Lonergan staying as "midfield depth", whilst Atkinson in his 3 year at Essendon has yet to cement himself into our best 22 after being recruited as a mature aged recruit.

Marigliani and Crameri, despite working hard for there opportunities were simply recruited as 'insurance' for us. If we were to recruit for the future, why did we not recruit a highly rated young midfielder that was overlooked like a Fasolo, or even a highly recruited Kyle Hartigan or Chris Luff?

Were looking for the short term and not the long term..

If they decide to keep one (or both) of Marigliani and Crameri, I could say we will go for Gorringe at pick 8 (as the EFC may be happy with where our midfield is at).
With regards to Lonergan/Atkinson, I'm pretty sure I said what I expect the club to do... I would love them gone, but since we already have 3ND picks + Howlett upgrade, and Houli's impending departure giving us a PSD pick as well. The club has stated they are not using any more picks, therefore the club must be intending on re-signing these 2. As I said, I believe they are doing so, so that they don't sacrifice midfield depth.

As for the rookies, I wouldn't be upset if we kept only Silverlock of that lot, and looked for younger mids with an eye more to the future.

I truly don't believe they will pick up Gorringe at 8, regardless of which way they go with the rookies. I really see the list management decisions that have been made to date indicate we are looking to increase our midfield depth in this draft (and that they are not happy with where the midfield is at), and we will only pick up a ruckman later in the draft or in the rookie draft.

Why would you delist other players (before the deadline) without re-signing these players first. What if the club offers a one year contract and another club says we will give you a two (remember other clubs will get them for free now) and a player walks out.

I just cannot understand why you would delist players prior to finalising all contracts. Just opens us up to a McPhee sceanrio again. Poor management once again.

People who sledge the club based on unlikely hypotheticals which only exist in their own head are idiots.
If they delist Hurley for a shot at Ed Barlow, it'd be poor list management once again.
See how easy it is?

Don't bother thinking through the situation, or suffer the indignity of waiting to see what they do, just wade in there champ and have a crack.
They're really only there to keep you happy and frankly, if they're not letting you know daily, they're dropping the ball.

If one guy backs out of an informal agreement, we should for evermore trade everyone who doesn't physically sign by the date (don't laugh, people have said this).

The point I am making is why take the risk once again when we have been burned by McPhee already. Surely you learn from your mistakes.

Correct me if I am wrong but final list lodgements are around the 1st of November. Why not wait till the last day (or the day before) and then announce the delistings alongside the player contracts?

As the club has already announced delistings it now changes the balance of power for Lonergan and Atkinson. They can request additional money, an extra year as other clubs may want them (as they come free and cost nothing).

No point in hurrying. Wait, finalise and then release. If say for example Lonergan refuses a contract we now have lost any chance of keeping Slattery or Still as we have already delisted them.

Heh, there have been a few.

I've been more of the opinion that post-trade week should see the club ease up a bit when playing hardball with renewing contracts.

Yep, I bet Lonergan and Atko are being hounded as we speak

none of these players r in our best 22 and I doubt other clubs are banging down doors to pick these guys up so no big deal if they don't re-sign

Other clubs may not be banging the door down but there would be interest as you get the player for free.

It is a big deal if they do not re-sign. It means we have delisted others when they could have played and are now forced to use pick 64 or whatever in the draft. This also means the pick Richmond offered for Houli would have been good for us then.

Re: Essendon list changes

:D at "lost any chance of keeping XX by delisting them". That is kinda the point.
If we announce Still and Slattery in a month, it gives them a month less to find a club, and we achieve what exactly?
You can't let one bloke's dishonesty colour every decision from now until eternity.
The actions of 1 arsehat shouldn't mean we stiff kids like Still and Tyson who aren't at fault whatsoever.
9 times out of 10 good faith prevails.

Oh, and McPhee's an arsehat who's completely and utterly at fault.

Getting a player for free is only good if you intend to use the player. It's no good to clubs picking up a sub standard 23+ year old if they don;t intend to use them. This is know as a list clogger.

I'm sure Essendon is aware of this and I don;t believe they are in danger of loosing these guys.

Re: Essendon list changes

I'm sure the club wouldn't have done anything like put them up for trade though.
If they did that, they really should have e-mailed whats_at_stake, and announced it publically, just so the players knew their standing, purely to strengthen our position come the crucial list-lodgement dates.
We all know, the only things that happen are those that get reported.

1) Joe Daniher must agree to join the club

2) Cant be drafted until 2012

3) No inpact until 2015

So we should wait five years
