Re-assuring and fun I guess but really does not mean a lot when you consider the players North are missing. I would have thought we are a 5 or 6 goal better side with best teams in generally.

still, I'll take the percentage!

Essendon played well.

You got to hand it to Sheeds, when he said a few years back that if the bummers were ever going to win a flag they would have to be as tough as north.
Well they are, it's actually like watching North of 96. Except the bummers have fairy floss boy and the hairdresser.

Well done bummers!

Essendon played all over us, but I don't think it was as efficient and ruthless a unit as we saw last year.
Having lost Watt early, it caused a bit of a reshuffle, with a key position player going off, and a one-position player, Burton coming on. Burton played a good solid game and was in our best, but ideally he would not have been on the ground as much as he was. Similarly Cochrane spent most of the game on the ground, probably helped by Abraham's absence. While he was good in patches, having him and Burton on for the majority of the game compounded our problem with a lack of legspeed, which is where Essendon were able to take over. In the meantime, I may have found how they create their space... but I won't share my theory until I have watched Essendon a bit more and can confirm it.

North were a disgrace. Carey wont play more than 14 games at best this year and Harvey and King wont make that much difference. My gut told me that the Roos were in for a tough year and boy was i right.

Not all doom and gloom for the shinboners.

Harris looks very very promising. Same thing for Smith. Petrie got lost a little but early days yet.

Reverse the players out (ie take 5/6 of the Dons B&F winners out of that side last night) and bring back the North blokes and see what difference it makes.

Last night really highlighted how much all clubs need there keys playing. Not only does it allow you to really strech a depleted side, by having less pressure on the 'second tier' types they can play with a greater freedom than may otherwise happen.

But the Dons were good, who would have thought Barnard would go back to back 4 goal bags at the 'G'? Mcveigh played the best game ive seen from him and their skills were sharp for early season form.

Still its a long way to go yet........

Cheers

Thanks Dutchy, but the fact remains that even if we had Carey, King, Harvey, and Martyn in the team we still would have lost. Essendon also had Wallis, Hardwick, and Long out, and Hird only played a half.

Still, it was a good lesson to the new kids like Smith, Harris, and Petrie, and a none to subtle reminder to 2nd/3rd year players like Rawlings, Motlop, and Makepeace and the more experienced but unfulfilled talents like Colbert, Sinclair, Rocca, and McKernan on what is required to match it with the best. Clubs in transition learn nothing from thrashing Fremantle (as we did in a pracce match the other week), but those who want to get better will learn from last night's game against Essendon.

Lastly, it was good to see Dean Rioli back on the field after his bad luck from last season. He did a few good things for the Bombers too (although his first possession was a shocker

). Great, that's all the rest of the AFL needs....another creative midfielder/forward to deal with along with Hird and Mercuri

Well done Essendon.
The game highlights 2 things.

1) The Ansett cup is a joke and was not taken seriously by Essendon.

2) Essendon MUST be breaching the salary cap, wheteher by underhand method or not. Of their team all 22 plus 4 senior players not in side would have to be on $300-$1000k a season. Let's consevatively say a $500K average. That makes $13Million without the rest of the squad!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I went to the MCG last night and the thing is, they will only get better. Unless things improve quickly, we will all be playing for second place again.

typical melbourne, running up the white flag before giving it a go.

If Essendon have improved this year (as opposed to North sliding, which looks a possibility) then I hope Hawthorn just see it as a bigger challenge to respond to.

There is a long way to go, but god it was pleasing to win by so much. I don't think we were as impressive as the margin indicated. i would have thought a 60 point margin would have been more appropriate.

Looks like we are going to continue our record streak of being top of the lader for consecutive rounds. if we finish round 1 on top, I think that will be 30 consecutive rounds we will have been on top!

Going by for and against numbers, we were exactly a 54 point better side than the Roos last year, and there seems to be no obvious reason why that won't continue to be the case, even with the inclusion of North's better players.
