Who was better, Hardwick, Mark J or Hibberd? Either way, that's a backline that hits hard!
Hille was more consistent than Ryder from memory
Misiti was A grade. Stanton always a B+

I'm just impressed that you went back as far as you did into our threads to pull out this one.👍

At the end of next year, you can most likely swap Daniher for Wright.

The search function was my friend on this one :)

Daniher was an absolute star of the comp at essendon before the injuries held him back - i would have loved to see what he would have been capable of had he had some continuity

I thought this an appropriate place but I thought about doing a team of 22 unique jumper numbers. Not confined to the 21st century though. There are some obvious ones but there will be debates for some of the numbers I'm sure. Here's what I have:

FB: 4 Gavin Wanganeen - 31 Dustin Fletcher - 6 Tom Fitzmaurice
HB: 17 Harold Lambert - 15 Wally Buttsworth - 9 Brendan Goddard
MF: 32 Tim Watson - 1 Jack Clarke - 13 Michael Long
HF: 5 James Hird - 23 Ken Fraser - 24 Frank Maher
FF: 18 Matthew Lloyd - 10 John Coleman - 20 Ted Fordham
OB: 27 Simon Madden - 3 Dick Reynolds - 7 Bill Hutchison
IC: 14 Jason Johnson - 26 Mark Thompson - 25 Roger Merrett - 8 Billy Griffith

Keen to see what others come up with as well.

That was the toughest call to make. I ended up favouring having two rucks instead of just one. Considered Ryder in 30 too.

Merrett starting on ball now over Jason Johnson imo
 
Have to think about the structure of the side now too. How many medium defenders do you have? What's the make up of the midfield? Here's my attempt from here:

Dustin Fletcher - Cale Hooker - Mark Johnson
Jordan Ridley - Michael Hurley - Mason Redman
Brent Stanton - Jobe Watson - Brendan Goddard
James Hird - Scott Lucas - Angus Monfries
Joe Daniher - Matthew Lloyd - Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
Paddy Ryder - Jason Johnson - Zach Merrett
Dyson Heppell - Adam McPhee - Darcy Parish - Joe Misiti

Honestly wouldn't have Mercs in there for post 2000, he really only played 2 more years and they weren't the greatest. That forward line is dire, picking Monfries and Daniher there is far from ideal (although I think we'll be able to slide Langers and Wright into those positions respectively as well).

Wellman missing is still a massive oversight. Ridley is also ahead of McPhee now. Swap Tippa and Cara.

My thought with both wellman and ridley is not that they aren't better than the other 3 small defenders, just that the 3 key defenders they are competing with are ahead of them.

i think you're right about tippa and cara so i will swap that one over.

Wellman and Ridley play/ed their best footy off-the-leash in a similar role to McPhee but are/were better intercept players. It really is a no-brainer to have McPhee outski altogether and someone else in on the bench instead.

Hurts my eyes seeing Monfries ahead of Mercs here. Mercuri’s premiership season is enough to keep him there imo.

Nah. He played 3 years in the 21st century. Monfries was better post 2000 than Mercs. Amazing player, but doesn't get in this side because of it.
