I was watching AFL Confidential or whatever its called on Monday night and Carey made a reference to the fact that James Hird had been on the show earlier talking up a top 4 finish for the bombers.

I know he is part of the club and its his duty and all, but top 4 - what a joke. Essendon?

Essendon are extremely average, with a midfield that rivals Richmond for worst going around. They will be lucky to win another 5 games this season.
To suggest they are top 4 is like saying Tambling is a better pick up than Franklin.

So you expect him to come on and say "we will finish bottom 8, we suck" that gives your team alot of confidence

well your team isn't going any better. At least we can beat teams which aren't bottom 4 contenders. Like to see how you go against west coast

Dons are doing good this year (compared to last). 3 from 6 is great.
Just got to be realistic.

Surely you essendon supoorters don't genuinely believe your are top 4 material? Concede a player can get away with that but deep down you don't believe it?

No i dont believe we will but i dont want to see the players say that they cant make the 4, i want them to believe in themselfs and not give up.

He didn't "talk up" a top four finish.

He said for Sheedy to stay we would need to have a remarkable season.

When asked what that was, he said a top four finish. Which he is said, isn't out of reach.

It isn't out of reach, we're only a game out at the moment. It's extremely unlikely, but he said if everything goes right then it can be done. And if everything goes right, there are probably 13-14 teams capable of still making the top four.

I'm more than happy for my club to have the self belief and the desire to finish in the top four, even if I don't believe they can.

Look I tip my hat to your unblinking confidence and optimism, but come on guys - you are 10-14th material.
Did you even read the responses from Essendon supporters?

Not a single one has said we think we'll make the top four, no one believes it.

All that has been said is we're happy for the players to aim for it.

There hasn't been a single example of unblinking confidence in this thread.

You're really bad at this.

Top 4 if we win another 12 games!! which wont happen.

Just like watching the kids show some glimpses of the future for now.Depending on that I won't be predicting top 4 for a while.

saying that, i don't want the "aim low to avoid disappointment" attitude some other teams seem happy with. So kudos to Hird

Exactly right, I'd rather them aim for top four, fail and hurt.

Than aim for 7-12, succeed and go - yeah, we had a good year.

Realistically the Bombers are potentially a top 8 side. If things go well, no injuries yada yada. Why not set high expectations? Its better than a coach coming out and saying that we're focussing on 2011.

Honestly, what do you expect Hird to say.....? Newbies.

Nice to see you have something to say after a Geelong win.
