We're an interesting case study in mediocrity

*held onto sheeds that year too long, topping up for another flag with hird and lloyd
*knights as a one man band, under resourced and battling club wide delusion re: rebuilding
*picking hird whose coaching experience was his sons u9s team
*doping, then fighting city hall
*get a bonus pick 1, recruit a short, kinda midfielder who cant kick and now plays bp.
*team who should have had pick 1 by rights just played in a gf....with the player we should have recruited, the player we should have traded for, and two players who left us in 2020.
*endless rounds inwardly focused boards
*nicking woosha then undermining him with a replacement just as he's settling us
*zero reining in of xavier and his ability to piss people off
*xavier pissing off an indigenous sporting legend who leaves the long walk board the week tippa retires.....all in the lead up week to a dreamtime game
*holding daniher for less than we eventually received, then being sold 3 magic beans (i mean top 10 draft picks) by Brasher
*ruttens sacking
*Barhams first few weeks (clarkson, no clarkson, lyon, no lyon, scott....sheeds undermines him, thorburns 24hr ceo tenure)
*incessant belief Dodoro is a good list builder despite 20 years of evidence to the contrary
*season on the line, top 5 in reach, barely beat wce and north, lose to pies and gws by ~200pt accumulative.
Players had holidays booked whilst season still alive.
But apart from that, things haven't been too bad...

Yeah not selecting Hugh McCluggage was a kick in the dick for sure.

You can still get a $1.10 with Sportsbet on the annual Essendon Line in the Sand speech occurring before Round 4.

It's pretty much compulsory to have at least a top 6 ranked defense to win flags, let alone winning a single final.

This is how Essendon have ranked in the league for points against since 2005 (After last finals win):

2023 - 15th
2022 - 16th
2021 - 9th
2020 - 15th
2019 - 12th
2018 - 13th
2017 - 12th
2016 - 17th
2015 - 14th
2014 - 4th
2013 - 10th
2012 - 11th
2011 - 13th
2010 - 18th
2009 - 14th
2008 - 18th
2007 - 14th
2006 - 18th
2005 - 14th

So in 19 seasons without a finals win, Essendon have ranked as a bottom 10 defense 17/19 times, bottom 6 defense 13/19 times and a bottom 4 defense 7 times.

This is all split between 7 different coaches too.

Essendon not in the big 4 of least subsidised clubs, despite 86000 members.

West Coast, Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn are the $uperclubs of the modern era in terms of finances, recent success and membership numbers as metrics.

That’s not mediocrity, that’s award-winning soap opera at its best! Who cares about winning footy games when we can endlessly churn out tragi-comedy at these levels 😊

AFL 2022: Variable funding of all 18 AFL clubs, rich and poor clubs, profits, which clubs are in debt (foxsports.com.au)

At the other end, the Tigers surprisingly had more funding than seven other clubs over the last decade. Richmond gained $13m of variable funding compared to Collingwood (none) West Coast ($525,000) Geelong ($2.6-$2.8m) Essendon ($2.3m) Hawthorn ($4.106m) and Fremantle (approximately $6m).

i mean, have a little humility. its one year and our upper band equals your lower.

Not sure how 2012 is financially relevant to today. We are talking about the state of clubs assistance last year. But 2023 is the same as 2022 Richmond and the other 3 clubs received the base amount. Essendon didnt. Its not just one year. We've turned our club around.

As for yours, the work is all in front of you (which is the point).

recency bias
Now the tigers have turned it around after a decade of assistance, you'll laud it over a team that might get 500k more than the tigers.

humility is all i'm asking.

We may be rubbish onfield, but somehow off the field we do well on the $$ front

I get the temptation to pot the bigger 4 clubs but this isn't about them.

It's about Essendon today. 86k members in 2023, same opportunities for sponsorship and investment. Yet need more financial assistance.
