Essendon, where are they now?

Clubs need a psychologist to come in.

It's amazing that the playing group have not shown one bit of improvement in mind set you think after years of failure the players will say "enough is enough" and change.
Rebuild of the leadership is my preference.
Something fairly easy to do as well

Change in captain to Merrett (liked his little hair pull on NN. we spiked after it and WC were off their game for a bit)
Hooker and McGrath his senior and junior VC's respectively

Enough pats on the back
Heppell is a great player and he leaves nothing out on the field.
But i feel he doesn't hold the rest of the group to his own standards.

If not Merret than Smith.

He would make a good captain imo is tough and not one for giving pats on the bum.

Would also bring back Goddard in some kind of mentor/leadership development role.

only query would be a relatively new to club player who has missed an entire season picking up that role
Perhaps as the other VC whilst McGrath is still groomed.

But he's certainly one who's aggression and non-stop competing would be a great example

Currently in no mans land... not good enough to contend for a premiership but too good to clean out the list and rebuild.

good summary.

We may need a couple of hard calls to fill some gaps
If its a Daniher, Hurley, Fantasia - we may need to lose one to get the currency in to pick up two very decent inside mids.
may not be this year. But it needs to happen.

They desperately need some inside grunt. Surely trade master dodoro can get on the phone to Dee's officials regarding the acquisition of one of Viney, Oliver, Petracca or maybe get Wines from port.

They cannot go into next year with
Heppel-Merret-Shiel as the starting on-ball group.

They've topped up too heavily to gut the list and rebuild, and if they were somehow able to get Wines in a trade for a player and pick 29, get a healthy Devon smith rotating through the midfield/forward, and add a fit Joe Daniher they will be a better team.

Health of Hooker/Hurley could also be a worry in the medium-term.

Dons don't have excessive draft capital to expend, so to make any wholesome changes you'd suspect they'd need to trade out some players.

They dont get any of those guys and get to keep Danniher. Funny old position theyve worked themselves into. They just had to get Shiel...

Exactly B4L. 90% is played above the shoulders and the players need some strong mental pumping. Look at what Richmond achieved when they got their psych in. Bingo.

is there a more delusional supporter base than Essendons, when it comes to what their players are worth in draft picks? Or who won the draft? or how deep into the finals they will go?

Forget the ladder, nothing has really changed there.

Delusions of Granduer. Thats where they are still at.

A statement needs to be made at the club where the players go "oh s**t" or I would tell every player on the list that if they are not prepared to do the hard work they can leave time for the club to be ruthless

Merrett? Hes got enough pressure on him. Let him play freely

As I check the ladder again... yep, we're above Hawthorn on the ladder. That's where we're at.

Some fans would rate their team after a finals exit on how well they'd done in their finals games. Essendon fans rate their finals campaign on how far they finished the season above Hawthorn.

I like it. They really should bring back Hird. He ran the club with very similar metrics during his successful stint there, and it is good to have your coach aligned with fan expectations.

Essendon are only a few weeks away from playing their best football.

They come out of the blocks early in trade period when Dodoro gets one over <insert team/s> by luring <insert good but flakey flanker/outside mid> to Bomberland when he could have got more elsewhere!

Then they roll into the draft where despite not having any decent picks coz Dodo traded them all away, they still snare definite gems in the mid to later rounds ... some of whom do actually come good.

Then we're into the part of the season where Mark Robinson and Timmy Watson really go to work at the coalface - endless segments at Essendon training, photo spreads in the Hun of the boys on camps, helping kiddies at clinics, profiles with the likes of Matt Guelfi talking about how he's the learned the lesson of whiting his hair etc etc.

Come January things heat up with the Bomber boys doing the hard yards in the media posing with cricketers, tennis players, talent show contest winners, as yet unmasked underworld identities and kiddies afflicted with awful diseases and conditions.

Then BANG late Feb and early March and the finals are upon us - every footy journo and media type will be full bore on the Bomber hype.

Finals defintely, most likely top four ... don't be suprised if the Bombers are there on the last day in September!

And then sadly for Essendon fans, actual footy played with a real life ball on grassy fields begins.
