They could
But the only logic behind this is that they've added Shiel to the team that finished 10th
We've added Lynch to the team that made a prelim
West Coast will add Gaff to the team that won a flag
Geelong added Dangerfield to the team that finished 10th and they didn't win the flag.

They're going to need a bit more explanation than just Shiel
How about if we add Daniher, Fantasia and Shiel? :p
Richmond and West Coast still the team to beat IMO.

Considering that Collingwood made the grand final, we really don't have an excuse to at least contend somewhat next year.

Another off season of Essendon hype until they completely implode half way through the season.

Delicious.

Their backline is suspect and bringing in Shiel still doesn’t help the soft blokes they have running through their midfield.

Can’t wait for 2019.
Oh this will be so so sweet to bump if we do well next year. This sounds like Richmond in October 2016 oddly enough...

Interesting that Essendon are only 1 Shiel away from the flag. After finishing 11th.

The same Shiel that has been spoken about as the weakest link in the GWS midfield (although he is a fantastic player) - is he really going to take them 10 places higher?

Okie dokie.

Six premiers before 1993: Hawthorn x3 (88-89-91), a team who hadn’t won since the 50s (Collingwood 90), another big four Victorian club (Carlton 87), and West Coast (92). 1993: Bombers

Six premiers before 2019: Hawthorn x3 (13-14-15), a team who hadn’t won since the 50s (WBulldogs 16), another big four Victorian Club (Richmond 17), and West Coast (18). 2019: Bombers confirmed

This can’t just be a coincidence.

Just because a team does something from somewhere does not mean history repeats itself.

Even if Essendon do win the flag, it doesn't make people morons because they didnt pick the side who finished 11th the previous season as flag favourites. Essendon simply don't have the runs on the board yet .

Omen if you’re a Bombers fan

No but completely writing a team off when they've significantly improved their midfield (the biggest deficiency on their list) and hammered the premiers on their own deck during the year is foolhardy.

Fair points about Richmind and WCE however Essendon's list is far more balanced than Geelong's.

Joe Daniher- close to #1 Power KF in the comp.
Further maturity in an already very exciting and promising group.

What's going to change between now and April? They aren't going to lose any players. Unless another drug saga unfolds or their plane falls out of the sky, Bombers plus Shiel will be the same team this month as in April. No difference between declaring it now or in 6 months time.

They were almost the best side in the comp on pure form at the end of the season, and with Shiel coming in and Daniher coming back, no reason why the can't pinch a top 4.

They're not better than the Eagles/Pies/Dees/Tigers/Giants for a start...

It's not the Shiel matter on it's own that has some bullish about us. Shiel adds to what is essence a group that is 23-28 years of age.

Look at the top 5 in the best and fairest just last week..when compared to other clubs. All 5 of Essendon's top 5 were in the mid20s.

The core group of 23-28yos is quite significant. We have heard it said before that 23-28 is the optimum age for premiership success.

Perhaps wiping them off the list to make finals is foolhardy. They will be in the race, but calling top 4 and even beyond at this stage is hopeful more than anything else. Just facts. I don't expect Adelaide to be considered top 4 contenders even though we should bounce back next year, we deserve a middling report based on our last output.

Good pickup.

In my top 8 predictions for next season I predicted Sydney and Geelong to drop out of the 8 and Essendon and Brisbane to come into it. That was weeks ago. Shiel coming would strengthen this notion that Essendon can make the 8. Right now though I still think they'll finish somewhere from 5th to 8th.

It sounds like late 2017 after you signed Smith, Stringer and Saad and were premiership contenders. Now you’ve signed Shiel who is good but not a top 3 mid at his current club and it’s happening all over again.
