For some off-season fun I'm proposing a draft of all Essendon players where posters get to name their best 23.

1,214 players have played for Essendon so entry is strictly capped at 52 posters.

Draft ordered will be a randomised snake order and of course each player can only be drafted once.

Once teams are drafted they'll be pitted against one another in series of polls until we have a winner.

Going right back to the beginning with Billy Griffiths to be my CHB. Played full back in a premiership team 100 years ago.

Tony ‘Budgie’ Buhagiar

- much loved cult hero of the early 80s. Second only to Bewick for pack crumbing small forward/rovers in my time watching at Essendon and was so very unlucky not to be a premiership player.

Disposals in finals; 29, 25, 23, 25, 23
Also kicked 42, 41, 39 goals in his first 3 seasons at the club.

Bryan Wood

Seriously difficult decision between about 6 players here but this bloke has the pedigree and fills a role on the wing. 3 x Premiership player at Richmond and another with us in ‘85. Also captained the Tiges in ‘81.

C'mon man, now you're dead set tanking

I am really enjoying going back through the clubs history with this draft. Putting some names out that people might not know.

I am going to take Len Bowe to play on the half back flank. This will shift Mark McVeigh to a back pocket and bring Gavin Wanganeen into the midfield.

Bowe was described as a 'gentleman and thorough sport' and was considered to be one of the best defensive player in the league during his time. And apparently he came from the Allen Iverson school of thinking as he rarely trained. Probably smoked a bunch of darts at half time as well, lol.

When he retired he was the all time games record holder at the club which is cool.

I'll take the ultimate swing man Bill Brittingham. Started as a FF, lead the VFL goal scoring in 1946, a premiership year. Then in 1949 he moved to full back to give a young bloke named John Coleman the FF gig, winning 2 more flags on our last line of defense.

Justin Blumfield please

DapperDon your up

Better known for his off field work rather than his short lived playing career, but in his 60 odd games he was a 2 x VFL leading goal kicker and 2 x Victorian selected player, He only played 64 games but still kicked 210 goals then went on to have a solid WAFL carrer also where he kicked 270 goals in just 60 games.

Averaging close to 4 goals a game over his career I select Ron Evans

I don't feel good about it but Andrew Lovett.

Football wise, he was a deadset gun. Unfortunately he seems to be a garbage human.

B: ... Hurley ...
Hb: N.Daniher Carlisle Houli
C: Goddard Shiel Ramanauskas
Hf: Lovett Lucas D.Rioli
F: ... ... Stokes
Fol: Jamar Cooney D.Reynolds
I:

Pweter you're up

When Coleman is having a rest I need someone to take hangers in the full forward line, and given the marking power on offer I also need some crumbing ability.

Good thing 2000 premiership player Gary Moorcroft covers both bases.

Phil Carman. Was an absolute freak capable of anything, and he often did in his early career at Norwood and Collingwood. Sadly we never saw the best of him at Essendon, what with headbutting umpires and all.

He’s one I was hoping might slip through. You could almost plonk him in the middle. His 1990 season as a centreman was outstanding.
