For some off-season fun I'm proposing a draft of all Essendon players where posters get to name their best 23.

1,214 players have played for Essendon so entry is strictly capped at 52 posters.

Draft ordered will be a randomised snake order and of course each player can only be drafted once.

Once teams are drafted they'll be pitted against one another in series of polls until we have a winner.

As I said in a previous post I have loved reading up on all these old legends.

I am taking Bill Sewart. Known as "Pimp" he was one of our best centreman from before the war and actually participated in the pioneer game in London in 1916 which was the first international game of Aussie rules.

Unfortunately he died from TB which he contracted during the war so we lost our on seeing his absolute best most likely.

Shifted him into the middle so Wanganeen could go back and McVeigh can shift to a half forward slot.

Blind Turn

Greg Stockdale

178cm dual premiership ‘forward’. He broke the league record for most goals in a season with 68 in 1923 after starting his career as a HB. Won our goalkicking x 3, managed ten goals in a game, and kicked 5 out of our 6 goals in a prelim final. Some sort of player for his time and even by today’s statistical standards he would be considered a star.

Dale Kickett

A player who I loved watching back in the day for his combination of flair and toughness. Found his home as a dashing defender at Freo where he won a BnF. Gives my team some indigenous flavour and adds another dimension to my defensive set-up.

Greg Sewell. Essendon hall of fame player and premiership half forward and winger. Was one of Jack Clarkes partners in crime in a stacked midfield rotation.

Was also our president during some pretty successful times in the 80s.

I'll take Hall of Fame full back Harry Hunter

I select Ernest James "Ginger" Cameron, another "What could have been" player.

A rover, nicknamed "Ginger", he made his debut for Essendon in 1905. Cameron was a back-to-back Best and Fairest winner for Essendon, winning the award in 1911 and 1912. After breaking his leg during the 1912 finals series he was forced to retire from the game at just 23.

I think Draper has already been selected

I think Draper has already been selected

Yeah he has, the sticky post hasn't been updated for the last 10 or so picks and Draper was one of them.

BomberTime have another go, I'll wait before making my next pick.

Howard Okey, affectionately known as Dokie*, a "fast, clever and reliable" half forward/midfielder who won the 1929 B&F, and represented Victoria in 31 and 32 when he also topped our Brownlow votes across both seasons.
