There's some studies that have been done that indicate something like 90% of all people would break the law if they knew they weren't going to get caught...here's a bloke who tells them what they want to hear, at a club that has a strong central personality culture going on.
I once worked for a destructive narcissist and I'm not claiming that was the personality here, but this person encouraged those around to get on board his ideas or you were an enemy and treated as such. Governance totally went out the window and you couldn't question anything including the clearly shonky procurements being done. If you did the whole group of sycophants turned on you and attempted to bully those not on board.
I outlasted them being razor ganged when the organisation had had enough by being the sole voice of reason throughout and spent the last four years fixing it all including the culture.
So I can see how strong, persuasive personalities combined with those willing to follow can override common sense.
Funny what happened at club level is now being replicated at supporter level.
