Essendon's Talls

Those players had shown next to nothing at their previous clubs before being traded for, they were traded for because they were relatively young and could fill a hole. Mumford was a 2-3 season wonder and Maric a 1 season wonder. Brodie Grundy hasn't even played a senior game yet.

Bellchambers is 22-23 and has already shown that he is an established ruckman who would be a number 1 ruckman at the majority of other clubs. Essendon just have the luxury of having an abundance of quality talls.

Essendon would laugh at anything less than a top 12 pick and even then they would be reluctant.

Can't see Bellchambers being traded in any case but just thought i'd try and make a point about his value.

Grundy has been back at VFL Level and Has shown Heaps. Gets Better Each Game. Coming off a Back Injury

Bellchambers and one of Hooker or Crameri to GWS for pick #1

Even all three for pick #1 if needed to get the trade done.

Essendon has a problem. We have too many talented talls to fit in our side. Pretend for a moment you're an opposition recruiter, and you need someone, what would you be interested in offering Essendon for any or all of the their tall players.

This is a thought experiment only, none of them are on offer that I know of. In keeping with that, ignore the peptide thing, which might be a factor in real-world calculations but in this instance we're talking purely football ability. I've omitted Hille and Fletcher for the sake of the exercise.

Michael Hurley, Patrick Ryder, Tom Bellchambers, Joe Daniher, Jake Carlisle, Cale Hooker, Tayte Pears, Scott Gumbleton

Im going to try an be realistic and offer this as a Fair trade.

Freo need an experienced Key defender to Replace Luke Mcpharlin after 2014. Depending where Freo finish. 1st round pick would be between pick 13-16.

Haduken, I would have interest in Tayte Pears and Cale hooker. Would you be happy if freo gave you pick 13 for one of those guys?

With Fletch being a strong chance of retiring, neither Pears or Hook would be up for trade. Pears should slot straight in next season.

One of Crameri or Gumby will go IMO, most probably Gumby. Job security would be slim on both accounts. Daniher I'd imagine coming off a strong preseason will be pairing up with one of Hurley/Carlisle and the resting ruckman up forward. Not enough room for them all.

Would take pick 13 for Tayte Pears in a heartbeat. Will come down to what happens with Gumby and T-Bell. We can't afford to lose more than one.

I beg to differ. Pears, Bellchambers and Gumbleton are the ones likely to leave. Hurley and Carlisle are both key defenders, and Hooker as the third tall defender.

Hooker can't play 3rd tall defender. That is the guy who half the time needs to take a medium or slightly smaller forward. Hooker will play on KP or rucks playing forward, nothing else. Pears, Hardingham, Steinberg would be the guys on our list competing to replace Fletcher for the 3rd tall down back. Doubt Hurley has the mobility for it either. Not many guys can play medium/small talls like Fletch does but still stand tall forwards. More often the third tall is someone like Hardingham who is medium, but when necessary stand a taller guy if its really necessary.

Pick 13 for Pears what have you been smoking

I know it sounds of Desperation...But Freos best Defender, Luke Mcpharlin is likely to retire in 2014. Our other 3 key defenders are Michael Johnson (Turns 29 in October), Zac Dawson (turns 28 in february) and a rookie we got last season in Tanner Smith (who is a good season or 2 away in being decent). So you see Freos defensive Problems in 2-3 years time.

I wouldnt mind either one, Do you rate Cale hooker very highly at your team?

Yeah, he's the #1 intercept mark in the AFL and we're one of the best sides in terms of scores from turnovers so he's pretty important both defensively and offensively

I'd have a look at Hooker but Pears looks terrible at times.

Pears just needs confidence. But I'm also of the view that Essendon's best key defensive combo is Hooker, Hurley and Carlisle so I can't really find a place for him

What would Hooker be worth in your eyes?

It would have to be a good deal, because he's much improved on last season and we got offered picks 25 and 26 for him then. There are 2 clear deficiencies in our side: the Angus Monfries type small forward, lead-up with good hands and good kick for goal and another line-breaking mid.

We haven't really got the players you want Lamb could be a possibility but he's hasn't had enough games to be worth anything and we don't really have a spare line breaking mid so maybe it would have to be our first pick which I am comfortable with.

Sorry, our asking price would be a fair bit higher. More like a McGlynn (even though that's never going to happen). Pears is the realistic option for Sydney.
