Travel EUROPE: Travel Tips & Tricks

Okay... So im traveling Europe for 6 weeks, im 21.
Planning on leaving Melbourne on July 15th (rough guess)
Returning August 26th (rough guess)

Flying in and out of London.
I'm going to the ashes test on July 18th-22nd - one or two of the days.
I'm going to the tomorrowland music festival which is in Boom, Belgium - July 26th-28th.
I want to watch a couple premier league games and the season starts Mid August.
I also plan on going to the Sziget Festival for a couple of days on Obudai Island, Budapest - August 7th- August 12th

I plan on visiting; London, Liverpool, Amsterdam, Paris, Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Berlin, Barcelona, Ibiza, Rome and Venice.

I will probably narrow it down and take off a couple of cities as I plan on being in most places for at least 4 days. Any advice on which way I should do the trip? The only plans I have set in stone are the ones above, I want to do the trip the smartest, quickest and most cost efficient when it comes to traveling from place to place.

Do you think the best idea is to get flights/trains? etc... All help would be great.

Just a question, do you know how to get tomorrowland tickets? From what I've seen last year they sold out in under ten seconds and there are no reservations, are you hoping to just find them on ebay or something?

As for how to plan it, look at what you hope to get out of each location, for example, make all your coastal stops in July as the weather will be at its warmest and the places will be at capacity (unless you're looking at relaxing) and try work it that way.

Alternatively, get a map out and mark all the spots you want and see if you can see a simple path of travel that covers everything, would be cheaper than bunny hopping around.

Do you have ashes tickets? They're sold out (i got a few)

Organise flights now, plenty of cheap routes around. Play around with sky scanner.

Used a bit of Sky Skanner to get around 1000?? Through Emirate for mid April!!

Im in the midst of convincing some mates to go
Want to hit Turkey/Russia/Sweden/Norway/Denmark/Finland/Spain/England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland/France/Germany/Belgium/Croatia/Poland/Switzerland/Austria and probably stop in at Japan on the way back
Good time frame? Im one of these unlucky sod's who wont be able to gain a Euro Passport, how hard is it to gain something longer then 3 months?

In France you have to be illegal for a year before you can obtain a Carte de sejour, which basically entitles you to work legally and receive the benefits of the french socialist systems. Its no real problem overstaying your visa in France, other countries I wouldnt know about though.

Remember your Schengen 3 month visa only applies to the 30 odd countries that are in the zone. IIRC Croatia isnt part of it, nor is the UK.... I think.

Yes so if you leave the 'zone' for say a week in Croatia, then return, do the 3 months reset?

I'd have thought they would put measures in to limit this because everybody would do it.

No it doesnt reset unfortunately. The 3 months begins when you enter a zoned country, and even if you leave and then come back 80 days later it still counts from that first entry. It resets after another 3 months out of the zone. So you get 3 months every six months. I hope thats clear. LOL

Mine ended in July last year, but I didnt leave so Im not sure how that works at all. I guess if I somehow got out of the zone and re-entered it would start again. I know my passport wasnt stamped entering Italy and Portugal (via airplane), and also wasnt stamped returning to France. Some countries are pretty relaxed, but Germany are apparently pretty hard on it.

In some cases if you are traveling by car you wont even be visa checked. For example yesterday I went to Italy (for cheap booze and cigs) and stopped in Monaco on the way home... No visa checks at any point, and thats the third such trip Ive made in the last couple of months. Spain is the same.

Planing on going over around june for 4 weeks.
Has anyone flown Royal Brunei Airlines? They have some pretty cheap flights melb - London. Just wondering on there service etc...

Also planning on doing most of the travel by train. Having been to europe but not travelled by train can you let me know some pro's and con's of train travel and also if its the best form of transport?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't but my brother has a few times and he said they are pretty good, nothing spectacular but worth it if you are looking to save some $$$ on flights.

Service and all that is fine, I was unfortunate and had issues with the tv not working on two of my three leg and my old man had similar issues when he came to visit me. Other than that they are great value and the food is fine, service ok etc.. not spectacular but saving a good $300-400 by going with them is definitely worth it.

I'm planning on going; London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Paris, Rome, Barcelona/Ibiza ... In that order. Do you reckon that's the most efficient order? The more direct the route the easier it will be.

I have looked into eurail passes and had a look at flights as well, still trying to figure out which option to go with or whether to use both. I just don't want to start booking flights online and then find out I have to pay a hell of a lot more to take my luggage etc.

I did Rome - Florence - Venice - Milan by train
then flew from Milan to Barcelona (quickest and cheapest way to get to Spain from Italy)
Barcelona - Valencia - Madrid - Bilbao by train
Flew from Bilbao to Paris via Brussels
Then train from Paris to Amsterdam
Flew Amsterdam to Prague
Flew Prague back to Rome

I loved the train, was a quick way to travel, most of the train stations are central in the cities.
I used flights between countries because it was quicker and often cheaper

I just had to book my train seats from here and paid for it all before I left. Also trains have more room for luggage and no checkin time.

Happy to answer any questions

How were train rides in Italy? Most likely doing Rome, Venice and Florence.
