Not that much less exciting than Tigers, Hawks and Cats winning 10 of last 14 titles.
None have been near the top for all of that time. The Hawks are currently on the bottom, The tigers were nothing for 9 of those 5 years. Also funny how you stopped at a smaller sample size. Using the same sample size so since 2000, those teams have still only won 10/21. Not even half.

Well 10/12 teams were in the top 12 of the UEFA Coefficient rankings and both Milan teams have been very successful this century.

Well then you’ll have to account for 3 Lions flags in a row.

Yes if they go with the top 12 in the UEFA coefficient I'd be fine with that. As long as whatever system they use for selection is clear, unbiased and based on performance.

That was my biggest issue with this proposal from the start - there was nothing elite about the teams that were in.
The problem with that is that for a club outside the top 12 it's very hard to increase that co-efficient as you don't qualify for European comps and if you do you tend to be in a lower seeding pot and get a much harder draw.

The system is set up against clubs breaking into that top echelon.

Since 2000, Essendon, Brisbane, Port, Sydney, West Coast, Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood & Richmond have all won a flag with all team bar Carlton and Gold Coast making a grand final.

That is 9/18 possible teams and 2 of which were only introduced recently so more like 9/17. As for teams who have made the grand final. 16/18 have had the chance to win a grand final, being there on the day the ball was bounced.

As for the EPL, only Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester and both Manchester teams have won. That is only 6/20 spots available each year. And mind you, many more teams have played in the league in this time.If you look at all the teams who havefinished top 2, the only new addition is Tottenham. so 7/20.There is no parity in soccer.

Like someone else said AFL has had over 30 years of drafting and salary caps. If you look at last 14 years, which if you like it or not is significant time to compare, then difference should be far greater

If Real Madrid and Barcalona need more cash they should just join the Premier League.
They don't need the cash. They want it.
Dual swoop on Mbappe & Haaland for Madrid
Barca looking at reacquiring Neymar while picking up Lautaro

La Liga could do with it too.

There was a good Economist podcast about it noting that its essentially a battle between open (with relegation) and closed sporting leagues. Owners do better financially out of closed leagues and football is a relative outlier in having open competition and relegation.

They did point out that closed leagues are generally marked by salary caps and drafts, which would require a pretty dramatic change to how football is structured and run.

How long does everyone here expect the clubs to keep operating at a loss? I’m against the ESL but I can understand why the clubs wanted the dough. You can’t keep the crowds out forever over a virus and then wonder why club owners are getting antsy over losing money. Don’t get me wrong, Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus dug their own holes. It’s time to give the clubs hope an open the gates.

Yes but note that this would just be for the initial invite. After that it's game on and coefficient becomes irrelevant.

the poorly run clubs have used corona as an excuse to push this ahead, not their years of poor financial control and willingness to stunt the growth of their own leagues for personal gain. now all of a sudden these clubs can't afford to run at a loss, after racking up large debts and/or using the club as their own personal financer. or they have just stood still in an evolving landscape, and old money just isnt worth as much as old money in the present day.

Even as a profitable one Levy tried using corona as an excuse. His "apology" was by far the least sincere of the lot too

Interesting suggest from former FA chairman Greg Dyke suggesting the government should set up an independent regulator for football.

Think it would be good.
