Never watched it before bar a video of Lordis winning performance a few years back.

I know to except cringeworthy europop.

Started watching at Turkeys entry (which was actually pretty good) and sat through a few amusing noveltys (pirates, angels and the spanish guy) and some horrible stuff.

Thoughts?

As for me, I love it :D Sure the music is shite but its good for a light hearted laugh

I watched it, but I agree with Terry Wogan in that the politics have finally truly ruined it.

That Spanish song was truly ____in pitiful and still out pointed quite a few other songs.

I actually enjoyed the songs from Iceland, Denmark and Norway the most.

Overall I thought the quality of songs was better than the last few years.

Eurovision is a fantastic event that makes me glad I don't live in the northern hemisphere :)

Pretty true I think.

Spain was so comically awful I give them points for having a sense of humour; once again, the Big Four delivered nothing worthy of competition (actually the UK's wasn't too bad this year but everyone in Eurovision except Ireland hates them).

And speaking of Ireland... in the wake of Dustin getting turfed they were obviously out for revenge - their top votes went to two last-place entries and the pirates of Latvia!

I think Terry Wogan's normally funny and entertaining commentary was flat as a tac this year.

He's had enough of the politicial rubbish involved now.

As he said, there's really no point in Western Europe turning up anymore.

I didnt understand what you guys were talking about regarding politics but I get it now.

I notice decent acts being shafted by political enemies.

Turkey and Greece were the standouts for me :thumbsu:

MG

EDIT: Russia wins

Greece and Turkey were the standouts, moreso Greece and having said that the singer is ruddy hot

The birds reading out the votes from Belarus and Denmark were very tappable aswell :D

Latvia were robbed.

I hope their rich pirate heritage comes to the fore and they take to the Baltic to exact their revenge on those lying cheating nations. They know who they are.

I'm sure the reminder was sent out to the CIS nations that their winter gas supply would only be guaranteed if Russia won.

The fact that these guys didn't win is an utter travesty. :D

The Pirate one had me in tears, top stuff.

There was a metal group (well looked like one) that was playing early on, 3 guitarists and a drummer and they had fireworks coming out of the ground, they looked pretty good, they werent singing in english and I didnt see the country they were from, anyone know?

Finland's effort?

"Teräsbetoni" - not 100% sure what it means but I think it's Finnish for "influenced by music videos".

Not quite the level of Lordi - now they were a band for the ages IMO.

Forget 9/11, the biggest conspiracy in the world is the break up of the Slavic states in order to get greater voting power in Eurovision.

Think about it!

Singing at Eurovision in something other than English just isn't a good idea these days.
Nah, I didnt mean it like that, just trying to describe them, I love watching the non english acts even though I have no idea what they are talking/singing about.

But it's true :) Monster rock make-up aside, Lordi reached a bigger audience because they were singing in English. I liked the music this year's guys were playing... but I didn't have a bloody clue what they were on about!

Maybe my standards are low, maybe it's the way she holds the mike, maybe it's the position she has adopted BUT...

I think the paper bag call is harsh.
Don't worry, I was thinking absolute stunner as well, but they had an interview with her in the green room, and fair to say close up her face really isn't the best. ;)

Not like I'd say no though :p

I suspect there is a subliminal signal in the broadcast "keep watching... don't turn the TV off... don't change the channel".

Why did Terry Wogan leave?

"nul point" has been dropped. Why?

The background dancers are funny to watch too.

Eurovision is not Eurovision without Terry Wogan. Julia and that dropkick with her were an extremely poor substitute.

Had to laugh at how much effort the UK put in this year and their entry was still crap... although a lot of crap songs have managed to win.

Watch it every year, and have absolutely no recollection of any artists or songs less than a minute after it has finished (Finnish death metal excepted). To me it is like the same cheesy, kooky and ultimately crappy songs sung every year... love it!

Does anyone know exactly why Terry Wogan isn't doing the smartass wisecracks this year? He makes Eurovision.

Also, who was the Azerbaijan chick? Stunning.

SBS replaced Wogan's commentary a few years back with Silvio Rivier (Global Village host) and got nationally panned for it... why they would do it again so soon has got me stuffed.

Definitely lowered the quality of the coverage significantly.
