What I dont like about Foxtels commentators is they only have one guy calling the game with two guys giving expert comments.

I still think he is calling in basketball match mode, but he's an ex-Sa guy so I'll give a chance to improve!

Hmm -so we bring back Matty Campbell and Jason Bennett!!

I still think he is calling in basketball match mode,

Yeah, the amount of times he mentions "game high". Crows have a game high 29 point lead.

WHO THE FECK IS JOHN CASEY!?

Former sports presenter on channel 7 in S.A in the late 80s, early 90s. Currently calls basketball on FOX. But at least he says Brett Ebert unlike Tony Shaw who kept calling him Russell.

I don't mind John Casey. Sure, he may use a bit of basketball terminology, but I'd rather have him commentate than the likes of Robert Walls, Anthony Hudson, Dwayne Russell, or any WA-based commentator (except Dennis of course).

I will be concerned if Casey's basketball sidekick, Steve Carfino, joins the commentary team

His regular sparring partner on the home of hoops.

Nah he loved to use the term "ran out of real estate" John the good commentators only use their 'catch phrases' every so often, it's why they are good.

Anyone else love Liam Pickering's call on Griffin when he called him a big Ruler? :D I laughed so much that I woke the dog up.

I mentioned him in the gameday thread but recieved no reply...

WHO THE FECK IS JOHN CASEY!?

I've never heard of him.

Is this the same man referred to in an article in the Age????

Fox Sports' NBL callers hit the mark
March 30 2003
By Leapin' Larry L

A while back, Telly Talk caught up with the NBL via Fox Sports for a TV double-header billed Big Wednesday. If we stick to communicating via old movie titles, arguably the first half of this could have been more fittingly described as Bad Day at Black Rock.

Last Wednesday was another, even biggerer, Biggest Wednesday, with two NBL semis live on Fox Sports - Sydney versus Townsville and Perth versus Wollongong. Unquestionably the games were better this time. (Compared with the previously discussed Canberra-Victoria game, this is hardly hall-of-fame level praise). And the TV production and court officiating were free of mind-snapping howlers.

On the production level, they pretty much shoot what you want to see, with the occasional instance where a viewer might wish they'd pull out of a "dramatic" close-up so he/she could see where the ball is going. I'm not a big fan of how Fox handles lighting at NBL games. The NBA rock show-type set-up - crowd in darkness, court lit - just looks better and more "big time" than the NBL "Let's put up the house lights so we can see ALL your faces" model, which tends to suggest a number of fierce floodlights thrown into a shed.

Commentary is probably the most evident strength of the Fox Sports NBL coverage. Both commentary teams kept the energy up when each semi was decided a long time before the final buzzer. What it confirmed this time was who their secret weapon here really is.

Regular anchor and play-by-play man John Casey got the Sydney game, assisted by Andrew Gaze. Casey's usual calling partner, Steve Carfino, took the Perth flight, accompanied by Derek Rucker. What all these guys have in common is they know their players, teams and the game, and they patently care about it. That kind of stuff goes a long way in the commentary booth.

Casey is a bit of your old school Sydney-type sport commentator, with the elastic vowels and a fair amount of tyre-pressure in the voice-projection department. He's sound on description, lighter on analysis, and well-researched. Obviously Gaze knows the game backwards, and he's shrewd on tactics, but he seemed more forthright and comfortable working with Carfino on the Cannons-Giants game.

This is the key. It's taken your correspondent far too long to cotton to this, but Steve Carfino is an absolute gun. He might not be the anchor that Casey is in a hosting role, but that will come in time, and at everything else - play-by-play, analysis, involving his co-commentator so it sounds like a team - Carfino is ridiculously smooth and capable, as was aptly shown in this Wildcats-Hawks semi.

He's the best sport-calling talent working outside the networks in Australian TV, pure and simple.

The only downside is a peculiar, fitfully ongoing attempt to turn him into what a colleague aptly terms "some hip-hop urban dude". Fox and he should avoid the gimmicks. Carfino doesn't need them.

Every time I saw Casey's face on screen I thought ...

"Did he forgot to paint his eyebrows on this morning?"

Have a look at the tape. He looked like he had a lead role in Les Miserables.

Actually while on Foxtel - with the death of Foxfooty (R.I.P) - do the games get replayed as much and as I have not seen all of the showdown, was wondering if anyone knows when/if its likely to be on. Or have I missed it for the week!

The replay will be on at some stage tomorrow iirc, you'll have to check the listings to be sure. On Fox Footy, I reckon there should be a push to get it back, I miss it so much.

Thanks - will keep an eye on it. Yep FoxFooty is definitely a loss if you were used to watching it - like I was

Which commentator was it that mixed up Thompson and Griffin? Easy to do...

Remember the last Channel 7 anchors? Sandy Roberts and Drip Morphett? Peter Landy? Casey not too bad by comparison surely.

The replay is not on until 2:30pm Tuesday. The odd game may get a replay over the weekend, but other than that, each game has one replay on Tuesday then that's it.

Quite frankly, very dissappointing, given the NRL matches are replayed like the footy was on Fox Footy.

Thanks - will make sure I get it right. The coverage is poor in comparison to the NRL that is for sure. I actually thought Fox Sp3 was going to be the channel for the Footy stuff.

The Fox book says 2 pm to 4 pm on Tuesday for the Port-Crows replay.

That's in EST, so that will be 1 30 pm to 3 30 pm SA time.

I grew up in the 1990's listening to the likes of Bruce, Sandy, Robbo, Terry Wheeler, Morphett(In the vacinity blah!), Landy(Who notched up 400 games called in 1997[I have the 'That was the season that was' tape;) ]) and Peter McKenna in the stand, so I have a soft spot for the above mentioned. I couldn't stand Commetti, and still can't.

There was nothing I looked forward to more than Friday Night Football, sitting back with a schnitzel straight off the barbie to watch a great match plus Bruce, Sandy, Robbo + Dipper in his prime coming through the speakers. :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:
