Yeah, what some conservatives fail to realise is that public transport, like health and education is a public good that isn't meant to make a profit. Improved health, education and transport systems result in flow-on economic benefits that far exceed their cost, but taxpayers/governments need to take the initial hit.

Unfortunately conservatives are so religiously invested in the concept of the free market that they can't see the bigger picture.

Having lived in Boston for a couple of years, this morning's events are extremely saddening.

No doubt those that have lived in New York and London would have similar feelings.

Amazing how gutless and cowardly some individuals are in this world to be targeting innocent and defenceless people. Nothing but scum and poor excuses for human beings.

No need to look at (and address) the complex social problems that lead people to do acts of abhorent violence. Just some dude under the ground.

I don't normally get excited about many movies far in advance, but man I am excited about The Great Gatsby.

It is one of my very favourite books... I've probably read it at least 15 times in my life and will read it several times more. For an absolute 20th century classic, it has never had a movie adaption worthy of the book. The Robert Redford/Mia Farrow version was atrocious.

Baz Luhrman was born to make this movie. I just hope it is faithful to the book. Just seeing the flashing green light on the other side of Long Island sound (those familiar with the book will understand) was enough to give me goosebumps.

One series of books I reckon would make awesome movies are the Tillerman books by Cynthia Voigt (I was SO thrilled when I found out "A Solitary Blue" was actually the third in a series of books!). "Homecoming" is about the four Tillerman kids crossing America trying to find a relative to live with after their mother abandons them in a car, and I can just see now how epic that could come across on film.

Reality check for the right wing idealogues with their religious devotion to the concept of austerity.What do they say about insanity... doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat then.

The economy isn't real in a tangible sense. It represents little more than the collective faith and confidence of those who exist within it. Austerity and doom speak completely destroys that confidence and sense of certainty.

It's almost as if Keynes never existed.

Spend during a downturn and save jobs, and save/pay off debts during the boom times.

In itself it is not a complete prescription for economic management, but it is a solid foundation that provides a level of certainty, stability and confidence. Hope we learn from Europe before it is too late. If not, god help us when Tony gets in.

I was hanging out for Powderfinger as a shameless 'Finger groupie - #8 and #10 is about right. Would've loved to see some of their others in there, but the nature of the beast is that it's generally just going to be the megahits.

It's pretty much the same here in Perth today but we don't get the ridiculous amount of rain QLD gets.

For warm sun in winter Perth is where it's at.
