Ex AFL Players becoming Umpires

I know that umpires are suppose to be impartial and they have a job to do, but how would you feel if it was a close game and the umpire was an ex player of the opposition. I know I wouldn't like it one little bit, should they became umpires or not??
 
thats a ggod question and yes thats true maybe players shouldn't become umps but the would have a good knowledge of the game?
 
Couldn't that scenario be avoided simply by not appointing umpires to games their old clubs are playing in? Taking that step though would imply that 100% impartiality can't be guaranteed.
Otherwise I think it's a fantastic idea to have ex-players as umpires. Lets just hope Mark Fraser can bounce the ball better than he used to kick it.

To turn this argument the other way, should ex-umpires become AFL players? They know the rules (sort of) and they can run pretty fast (backward's, that is).
