Hot Topic "Exodus" Isn't Just A Bob Marley Album

Yes for sure, it is now a thing.

No stigma in the industry for changing clubs now.

Some fans will bleat and boo but there are so many club changers out there now, they'd be in good company.

Could you imagine Robbie Flower changing clubs to have success? Not a chance. Loved the club and guernsey so much, he would have happily not played a final and been a fiercely proud demon regardless.

So what steps does the club need to take to prevent this from becoming an ongoing issue ??

Or is this how footy in the new age is going to be with many players moving each year (ie. the Free Agency era) ??

Selecting a coach that can establish a culture and development processes that are worth hanging around for. Hitting the draft more successfully than previously so that players can see success on the horizon. At least the model is the theoretically correct path to success this time around, we went for the shortcuts early in the Ratten reign, and MM went into arse saving mode last trade period. One of Carlton's strengths, but also one of its flaws is that "people don't leave Carlton". We might need to attach a little less in this era.

Happened to Brisbane, St kilda, Western bulldogs and now us. Its the new environment of free agency and can end up a win for player and club in the long run. Hasn't hurt the bulldogs.
Agree, reverse the ladder positions of us and Hawthorn and the Hawks would be experiencing the same as players want to find a new team capable of success and one that can hide the flaws in their game or personality.

Football clubs have turned into football businesses, players are now employees. Players know the club will move them on when it suits, now they have the power to move themselves and are taking full advantage to get what they want from their career.

In some ways this is merely a reflection of the modern workforce, 30 years ago jobs were seen as careers for life and players wanted to be one club players. Now the average person changes jobs to suit themselves every 5 years or so and often take on jobs as a stepping stone to something else. Given players are now drafted to somewhere they have little or no connection (zones are long gone) it is not really surprising they treat footy like a job. They are willing to shop their skills around to find a place where they believe they can get the best for themselves and are happy to move to multiple clubs to make it happen.

This is only the start of the slippery slope of other world sports where money, not loyalty, becomes the currency that talks. Success will provide some insulation while a salary cap remains, however if it becomes a free for all, only those with access to bottomless resources will have any chance of winning the main prize.

Three rounds from the end of the season, bottom of the ladder with little hope of changing that position & no senior coach has been appointed yet.

Tom Bell has called for a return to QLD, Lachie Henderson wants out for money & fame, Chris Yarran is talking to clubs behind the scenes & apparently Mathew Kreuzer is fielding offers from a number of clubs.

We appear to be experiencing something of a player "exodus".

The question is, why are these players wanting to leave ??

What has the club done to bring it to this ??

Is it a a cumulative result of very poor player management over a long period of time ??

Are there others planning to jump ship too but are waiting for the right time to say so ??

Is our club so 'on the nose' that no-one wants to come here ??

What needs to happen administratively to turn this around before it becomes a calamity ??

Very worrying times ahead for us methinks !!

They are being pushed out the door to provide the solid foundations for a rebuild. Best way to rebuild quickly is to gather 3-4 picks inside the top 20 a couple of years and I get the feeling that SOS is all over it.

Then again, when you lose a lot without any real hint of improvement on the horizon, then players are naturally more likely to leave and chase success. That's just the nature of the beast.

The Bell situation is unique, if his dad is sick I don't begrudge him seeking a trade home. Call it an exodus, yeah fine.. call it a required exodus, definitely! We should have started it years ago but better late than never.

"This is the cleanout that we had to have...." - a general consensus not so long ago.

"Holy s**t... We're losing X, X and X... It's a mass exodus..." - lately.

Aside from Tom Bell, who you simply have to respect because of the way that he has consistently gone about his football at the Blues and for whom the reasoning is not football related then good riddance, we aren't losing anyone that we cannot replace with stronger character.

I've calmed down since first hearing the news about Henderson. However, the reality is this. If the Carlton Football Club in its position that it was in was the club that he wanted to captain is not the same club as what we're hoping to build in the future then that can be nothing but a good thing. If he doesn't want to be part of that club moving forward and the feeling is mutual then good luck. That type of personality will not endear him to another club when the club is against the wall be that in a finals series or not. You need strong characters and clearly that wasn't him.

We're going to lose the mice off of the sinking ship. But what we need are the captains who will go down with the ship and when it doesn't flat out stick will come to the forefront as we rebuild.

Of the players mentioned the only one I would miss would be Kreuzer

Bell has a crack and like many have said he has a valid reason for returning home

Yarran & Henderson have been huge disappointments

No stigma in the industry for changing clubs now.
No stigma perhaps but you won't be remembered a club champion. Murphy could return as a top 20 player and potentially be the difference for several teams vying for a premiership. Instead will get smashed from pillar to post tor the next few years and likely retire before success comes our way.

Henderson may piggyback a premiership but only one is going to be spoken of by their supporter base in 10 years. Considering success is never guaranteed I still think plenty of players will favour the former.

Stockpile picks I say, taking into account next years draft is meant to be super. Its not about just building a side to be competitive. We must build to win premierships. Its really hard to picture anyone of limits apart from Cripps and maybe Murphy.

When we look at our best team in recent years 2011, we were miles away from a flag. Happy for Henderson, Menzel, Yarran, Bell to go. Ive got full faith in SOS to deliver the right quality kids in return

Agree re 2011. Whilst we played finals and Ratts to his credit looks to have wrung every bit out of those players we had a lot of B grade plodders playing at their best. We made short term decisions re our list thinking we were close. It was very similar to Dany Frawleys Richmond 2001. He thought his list was close also. But just like us ten years later the house was built on pretty ordinary foundations and she's come tumbling down.

Henderson, Yarran and arguably Bell are not players who will bring the next round of success

Therefore there should have been serious "are you right for us or better for another club given what journey we want" discussions, and hence players wanting out. Bell is a unique case.

Rebuild rebuild rebuild.

I reckon Geelong are no hope of a flag in the next 5-6 years.

Dangerfield or not they will bump along with some finals appearances but really don't see that list as premiership potential. To me they are making some of the same mistakes Carlton has in overrating their list and not properly rebuilding.

Geelong are the classic example of a team on the slide after having a dynasty. They're trying to clutch at whatever straws that they can to continue believing that they're still capable. In that respect I agree with you, Andy.

I really couldnt imagine a lot of the old Carlton players ever leaving the club to go and play for another one... at least not the guys who ended up playing over 150 games. But they did... they usually went to somewhere like St Kilda for the last year or two of their career because they knew that if they went to somewhere like Richmond or Essendon or Hawthorn, they would end up being remembered more for their success after leaving Carlton instead of being remembered for being Carlton legends.

In this day and age where there is pretty much zero loyalty in either direction, it's good to see guys like Kreuzer declining big money offers from other clubs to go and play for them when you know that some of the others would jump if offered a big pay cheque. And then you have guys like Murphy and Gibbs signing long term contracts (admittedly on big bucks) to stay with the club and be a one club player.

As has been noted elsewhere, the club is desperate to instill a culture of giving all for the jumper into the players... while pushing Matthew Kreuzer out the door in an effort to get band 1 compensation for his free agency departure. This highlights one of the big hypocrasies of the club... demanding loyalty from all, but showing none to someone who wants to stay and give his all for the club.

Dylan Buckley is someone who would play for match fees alone if he had to. Sam Docherty is another. Bucks would do it because he is a blue blood... it's in his nature. Doc, because he was a blues supporter growing up and loves the place. They would never leave for any price.

But, to be honest, I think that the club needs to start being a place to be loyal to... they need to start rewarding loyalty over consistency.

And above all... the club needs to start becoming the sort of place where loyalty to the club is the norm... not the exception.

If Kreuzer leaves because he was forced into fielding offers for his free agency services? Is that a good thing and is there a stronger character than his out there that we can replace him with?

Danger, a fit S Sellwood, a fit Menzel, a fit Duncan and Hendo at CHB. They should be top 4 next year, it's not out of the realms they could challenge for a couple more years if they can pull all that off before the inevitable slide.
