since when would completing a psych test on an 17 year old kid hold any weight, when I was 17 I didn't know what the hell was going on! I would spend more time talking to their parents, teacher and club coaches and less time talking to them! Apart from- so you wanna play footy? How much booze do you think you can drink during the season? Our club would prefer you to only have 2 girls on the go at once, anymore and it is too much for you to handle!

If he really wants to go back to Melbourne though, he'll be very disappointed by our weather and access to beaches.
Urgh.

Well, you would hope the lifestyle preferences and interests of future draftees don't extend much beyond "the weather", playing golf and similar recreational pursuits, or day trips to beaches. If these don't appeal, and the player has close family ties, CULTURAL INTERESTS, or a desire to meet a mix of other 20-30 year olds then this exodus cycle will continue in perpetuity. The exodus of 20-30 year olds (to Melbourne, Sydney, or o/seas) from Brisbane is huge. Anyone who has grown up in the place would agree. I remember a short film released a few years back with a title something like 'All my friends are leaving brisbane', or Mal Michaels comment when leaving the club (for various reasons) something to the effect of "it isn't the club it's the city". This Guardian article says something similar.

As there isn't a great deal the club can do about these external pressures it drives home the importance of implementing effective support structures for new players, and enjoying sustained onfield success.

Genius move by Angus Johnson to station the club in a new location
