No....Epistemology & metaphysics form the foundation for all human knowledge....Including science.

That is why in any branch of study, once you go beyond a mastery of it, you are awarded a Phd....A doctor in the philosophy of Science.

Understanding science & it's processes is one thing, comprehending the grounds for that understanding is quite another thing altogether & is where philosophy comes into the equation.

Yeah....Prior to the splitting up of schools into branches of specialized study, most came under the bridge-head of philosophy.

But given philosophy deals with the theory of knowledge itself, then most fields of study (Not Medicine) still accord with the title...Why?

Because philosophy is universal to them all.

You are confused between the subject of philosophy and the use of the word philosophy. Its a historical term which means "love of wisdom". Only you would try to associate a phd with your pseudo science

As a non-believer (agnostic though, rather than atheist) I'd contend that religion is equally a human endeavour, drafted in before that new kid Science started training the house down.

Both attempt to explain the world, how we came to be, and where we are all going - science the physical, religion the metaphysical.

We're social creatures. Most of us feel as if we 'belong' to something larger than ourselves - a family unit, a football supporter base, a nation. It terrifies some that there is nothing left after this life but blackness and dust. People work hard, they do good deeds, so where's the reward in an absolute and final death?

Religion, the 'belief' part anyway, helps fulfil our psychological drive to belong, and to be loved.

Science assigns facts, but does not address the emotive side of the human condition. Even the scientific breakdown of 'love' - a gradual release of chemicals in the brain necessitating a maintained and close proximity to whatever triggered that event so you can continue what is in essence a narcotic effect - leaves a lot to be desired as far as romantic fulfilment goes.

And religion is all to often a matter of faith not fact. God is everywhere and so far beyond our understanding it doesn't even make sense to try and unravel his mysteries. But humanity also needs to know the wheres and the whys of its own existence to the point that faith alone doesn't cut it.

I kind of look at it that the more Science explains, the more Religion retreats. It's a negative way to look at religion sure, but I see Science as the light and Religion (organised religion I should say, rather than individual belief) as the darkness.

I'm agnostic right now, but I believe one day they will replicate abiogenesis under measurable scientific conditions.

You obviously didn't know that at the mouth of the Murray is an island shaped like the womb and they knew and labelled it sacred ground thousands upon thousands of years ago.

You're right in that. But did you know why I chose the Middle Ages to make my point? A lot of indigenous knowledge was cast down as Pagan belief by the early Medieval churches - a lot of what the Druids knew about our natural world for instance was labelled as witchcraft and its knowledge became forbidden.

Science didn't begin with the Modern Age, if I came across as saying that then I apologise. But we lost so much during the ascendance of the various Religions that many mysteries, including the science behind the construction of the pyramids, remain just that because of the knowledge lost and destroyed.

While I disagree with your penultimate sentence, it's nice to see a sensible & thoughtful response for a change.

But yes, that is the general crystallization of the anti-clerical enlightenment movement....With Evolutionary theory seen as the final nail in the religious coffin, so to speak.

Fair enough. While I'm hostile in varying degrees towards Organised Religion as a socio-political construct, I have absolutely nothing against individual beliefs. How can I? We're all trying to work our Universe out, just with different methods!

What foundations of knowledge is that? there is no objective truth no matter how hard you try to claim there is, again you are fooling nobody How is ten commandments the objective truth? i have asked this question a 100 times and i know i wont get an answer, i repeat, how is it "objective knowledge"? you have no idea about eastern religions, i am asking you again, why does Hinduism talk about subjective truths then?

You also fail to mention that buddha taught that life is an illusion and perception is all that exists. He also said his four noble truths are not universal but asked people to verify it with their own experiences before following it (as people were following religion blindly in india back then). As i said you have NFI.. ever read the dhammapadas?
