Apparently it is anti-air missiles, and there are lots of explosions around the city.

Are they being attacked, or are they attacking?

Confusing times indeed...

I doubt it is the US who is doing the bombing. Reports suggest it is Afghan opposition groups who are responsible.

The yanks would be very very sure of themselves before they started any strikes, as yet they have announced nothing (in terms of who they feel is responsible) so I don't think they are responsible for the Afghan bombings.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is the Yanks. Last night a top ranking military official was on radio saying he believed the only terrorist group who could possibly have the resources to organise something like this was Osama Bin Laden. Of course, we may be proved wrong, but don't forget the US has the best secret intelligence in the world.

No doubt they would have a fair idea where Bin Laden is based, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have attacked. Still, it's too hard to speculate at this stage.

a group in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Afghanistan, and have said they are going to strike again but didnt say when or where

I have to disagree Goalden, the yanks intelligence service had no idea about the attacks in America last night. Not a clue that a terrorist group was organising mass hijacks of commercial airliners, mass destruction on a grand scale etc. That's pathetic - they have been caught with their pants down big time.

There will be huge ramifications in the US intelligence agencies. The head honcho of the CIA for example, must be feeling very nervous right now.

I don't see how that could have stopped it, Dipper. A small, dedicated group, if their security isn't comprised, will succeed. This mob have just proved that.

Late last night when I was still up, the speculation was that security measures against terrorists had been pretty good and that had forced them to develop better security to stay ahead of intelligence forces.

I just got an e-mail from a friend who reckons the security at Boston aiports is very lax and that in the past he is aware of people who have managed to get their hunting knives on board planes there.

That's all the terrorists needed to control the plane apparantly

I thinkwe are going to have to accept that increased security at airports is going to be the order of the day. And fair enough too.

I'm not saying they could have stopped it Hippie, my point is if they were doing their job they should have know something was afoot and that heinous acts were about to be comitted. They could have then placed "critical" locations (like the White House, World Trade Center etc) on alert status; kept building occupancy to a minimum etc while they gathered further intelligence on the threat. Could have saved many, but not all, lives.

Cripes; there were rumblings/rumours about JFK's assassination in the intel community weeks before it happened.

Nope, the US intel community has become lax and lazy since the end of the Cold War. No real threats anymore, that type of thing.

Having said that, Bin Laden's modus operandi (and I am CONVINCED it was him) is to involve as few people as possible; thus it is hard for info to leak out. Half a dozen nutbags with Bowie knives and kaboom, thousands dead.

Perhaps some of the blame should also fall on Airports and their seemingly lax security.

Apparently the Boston airports security was very lax until a couple of years ago after the relevent authority fined them about 180,000 dollars because of it. Since then it has been upgraded to be on par with every other airport in the US. I think it wouldn't be all that hard to get a knife on board a plane at any airport.

You can simply have a carry bag with metal framework and have a special 'hidden' knife sheath near it, disguising it from xray and metal detector security.

Too easy really.
