Okay – have filled in as many of the blanks that I can with the info available…

I realise there is only a limited sample selection available [20 players] – but I still think we can have a look and discuss/decided if we can identify any trends of our fastest kids over a 20m sprint – and whether height/weight even position might be linked to ‘explosive players’.

Again I grave doubts on the accuracy of the Bergers 2007 time – considering it is 0.07 faster than the fastest ever recorded at the combine/draft – I am going to dismiss.

For me the obvious standout from the info in the above table [again after removing the Leuenberger time] is…

  • A trend that time increases as height increases and
  • That a high proportion are linked to a defensive role and
  • Four of the best times available are defenders drafted in Leppa’s time at the club.

Discuss…

Over such a short distance it would take longer limbed players longer to wind up, so i can see the smaller height/smaller time correlation.

Closing speed is really important as a defender and usually it is over a shortish distance, so I can see why they would draft for that.

Still looking for the ethess.

Interesting to see Rich with a quick sprint time. Im not sure I would have picked that
Maybe Rich was being chased by some bloke in a wheel-chair at the time? ;)

Apparently Hammelmann may have also run a 3:05 - but cannot locate any secondary data.

I'm more a 'breast' man :$, not touching a thigh so the "elite thigh-height ratio vs explosive speed sine wave" is all yours to pie chart.

Nice work. Sample size is a factor as you say. Also the groupings. For example, changing them slightly gives you these averages:
Time BMI Height
< 3.00secs 2.93 23.29 188.14
> 3.00 and < 3.10 3.04 23.86 187.71
> 3.10 3.13 22.60 196.80
Which does slightly break the nexus between height and speed.

Exactly.

I can pretty much pre-empt the general consensus towards the end will be...
  • we have the best speed/thighs/wrists - no matter what the players height
  • you can twist the stats to prove it
  • NO, we REALLY have the most explosive players in all positions and they have great thighs
  • and Tairy Greene will still have no idea why this thread exists.
:D

When were these times taken? If they are a few years old I suspect some of those would be improved with the professional training they receive. Thought McStay would be mid 2.90s for 20m. With the averages you can see a gradual trend suggesting a slower 20m dash with an increase in height, but Green seems to be an outlier that drags the average height down a bit., and it seems the average height would be around the 191 cm mark.

Would think Zorko might be our most explosive player. Would have loved to see Akers times I would think he has been our most explosive player ever?

Brad Harvey would probably take that mantle i'd say purely on sprinting times

Apparently Leigh Ryswyk was fast but I never saw it on the field.

Yea, he was so fast, he made fast look not fast in fast kinda way.

On the other side of things, I swear Green is the slowest fast you can find. Almost so slow he isn't fast even though he isn't slow. In as fast kinda way.
Actually what happens is he goes and time speeds up around him. Makes him look slower than he is.

I believe Berger's time was 3.02 seconds.

Yeah, Leuenberger's 20m sprint time was 3.02 seconds. And Hammelmann has in fact ran a 3.05

I think we may see Rich use his speed a bit more in 2015. Hopefully the extra midfield grunt helps him out. Your not going to come in and tag Beams, Rich and Hanley.

Was Beams tagged much at Collingwood? I am quite happy if people want to tag Beams and leave Rich alone *evil anticipatory gleam in the eyes*

Not a whole lot. Swan and Pendlebury have always been the more obvious options.
