Hi All,

Im very keen on this selection as the misses is a big Dees supporter and they are very much my second team. I also follow the under 18's quite alot... I need to get my footy fix being a Swans supporter living in Melbourne, your club and the under 18's give me that.

They will all be very good players, id like to put forward my evaluation.
I have put it down below.

Daniel Rich.
Positives: He is a true footballer, with a great footy brain and tremendous kicking skills. Has a very good size about him and with a bit of AFL coaching he will learn how to better break a tackle and use his size, will make an immediate impact and help any midfield.
Negatives: Is slower than people realise, not saying he is Peter Everitt but he is not Daniel Kerr. Also happens to blaze away a bit to much, will often prefer to just bomb it rather than find an option.
Melbourne perspective: Of course you guys would love him, who wouldn't want a future star midfielder, he has all the attributes to be a star.... however, I really think you guys have players who can be midfield stars already, Mclean could be anything if he stays fit, be honest with yourselves guys, remember just how good he is. I also rate Buckley (if he can get kicking right) as one of the brightest stars in the league. Consider him but strongly but think you will pass.

Nick Naitanui.
Positives: Could be one of the greatest ever. An amazing athlete!! Can jump better than anyone and is the fastest big guy I have ever seen. Could be a mixture of Adam Goodes, Buddy Franklin and Aaron Sandilands. Amazing potential.
Negatives: Could be one of the worst draft picks ever. No football brain!! His skills are below par for such a high pick, it could easily be tought, but if he can't learn how to use both feet and hands he will be explouted at AFL level.
Melbourne perspective: Don't let anyone fool you, he has every right to be number 1 pick, he isn't just a ruckman, is so much more, could be a dynamic forward/midfielder in the mold of the new type of player (Buddy/Richo). You need him in many ways, could solve ruck problem, could solve forward problem, will solve marketing problem (shouldn't base that on number 1 pick though). I honestly think while right now he may not be the preference, your recruiting manager may not be able to resit some of the amazing things he will do at the draft camp.

Jack Watts.
Positives: Very strong football brain, amazing space and time (much like your own Cale Morton), all the best players have that skill.A beautiful kick, no need to worry when he is taking the set shot, he will usually kick truely. Very good hands, can take a very strong contested mark, this is where he gets his similarity to Riewoldt, Nick is currently the king of contested marking in my opion. Best thing about Jack is his confidence, as shown in his second highlight (first goal) in the video above. It is rare to find a 17 year old tell the rest of the team to settle down, because "I am taking this goal from 50 on an angle. Don't worry guys, I'll get this for you." This is something he will need at AFL level.
Negatives: Much like Rich, his pace isn't as good as people claim it is. While he does have a fairly good aerobic ability, he will never outrun a midfielder. Questions over his forward line pressure and his hardness, it may be true but in many ways I disagree with this thought, it caneasily be tought and from what ive seen he plays alot harder at the ball for his school (he seems to care alot more about his club rather than a TAC team or state rep.) Which isn't a bad thing, he will have his one club and should fall in love with it.
Melbourne perspective: He like both of the above players fills a need at Melbourne, Jack Watts is a tremendous young man, confident, skillful and has a good head on his shoulders (evident by the importance he has placed on finishing school). One of the best things going for him is probably his character. I see him as the potential number 1 pick, I believe his talents are more impressive than Rich and Naitanui. His strong hands and sure goal kicking will make him a household name in the AFL. Im not sure if he will be played as a FF, I believe CHF is a distinct possibilty. Would work well in his first few years playing beside Robbo Miller as a FP.

Conclusion:
Rich could be a star mid, however I already believe Mclean will be, with Davey, Jones, Morton, Buckley and Moloney around him the midfield looks ok for the future in my opinion.
Melbourne ruck stocks are strange, Paul Johnson came on in leaps and bounds and solidified a starting 22 spot as the back-up ruck/forward this season. Jamar was used as this tap ruckman, in my opinion proving while he is a trier is not up to the grade. Melbourne should do everything to get Warnock as he is perfect for you but it is looking unlikely which bolsters Naitanui's chances.
Wonaeamirri, Sylvia, Miller, Robbo, Bate, etc..... whats missing? the star 195cm plus forward.... Jack is currently 194 cm's but will grow to 196-197 in my opinion. His talent is undeniable, will take the game saving contested mark and kick the game winning goal. While he will be 3-4 years off taking the league by storm, he will, in my opinion he will be the best player in this draft. Melbourne should draft Jack Watts.

His contested marking, time and space, goal kicking ability, leadership, the respect he has from his team mates and his on field confidence (not cocky, but believes in his own ability) make him Melbournes ideal pick. If he was from WA he would be the WC and Freos number 1 choice. The Victorian boy will play for Melbourne for life.
Next seasons forward line at some stage may read:
Bate, Miller, Sylvia
Wona, Robbo, Watts

P.S........ Watts will never play a good game against the Swans..... I hope!!

Nice analysis Australia, for a Sydney supporter, you sure know alot about the MFC! I also agree Watts is the man for the Dees.

You have however, forgotten a key component of our future midfield:
Jack 'Grimey' Grimes.

You'll have to forgive me on forgetting Grimes, don't really know much about him.... as I said only secondary supporter of the Dees, Sydney is my club. Tough living in Melbourne and not seeing them so much, but the misses and her family go for the Dees, couple that with being an MCC member I see them live most weeks. So while I know alot about the guys who play in the Demon 22 everyweek, I don't know much about your other guys playing in the reserves.

Correct. Watts has Hirds football brain, movement, time and skils in Reiwolt's frame.

Very excited about picking him up with pick 1.

Saw him in his last game in the TAC.

He is all class.

After watching the vidoes i still think we should go for Watts we need a forward. I would then take rich second and Natia thrid.

Watts didnt get a lot of the ball but he contested very well, very agile and has a nice kicking action.

Rich next year will be like Palmer this year, mature body for his age gets a lot of the footy tough in and under player with good skills wen he gets spaces.

Natia has a great leap very athletic and competitive will need to work on his skills. Would be interesting to see how he goes against bigger bodies in the centre bounce as players could use their size to drag him down.
