2000 list wasn't that bad at all. Burke, Harvey, Loewe, Thompson, Everitt, Young, Wakelins, Aussie, Barry Hall, Max then young blokes like Lenny (have missed plenty of others. That is an older, but much more talented and better performed list. They underachieved and were poorly coached and the club was a shambles. As far as talent and performance goes, our list now is nowhere near that 2000 list.

i asked you if you enjoyed footy more this season than the 80s and the answer i got was no... you mentioned age and distance... unless i misunderstood your response? so i was trying to understand why?

if its not distance. is it just age then?

I said it was distance but not because of 11kms but because of the ease getting there. I still fail to see what that has to do with our pathetic footy for about 6 years of the 80's. If you could explain that I'm all ears.

i am trying to understand why you are not enjoying this season more than the 80's that you consider to be poorer than now. like if its not as bad, why is it less enjoyable?

so its only due to ease of access and age? i take it you don't like watching on tv live and prefer live football? have you gone to a game this year?

I didn't enjoy last season as much either. You seem fixated on this year. I go to the footy to hope we win not because we are poor or good. I have set games I can go to whether we are good or bad. I can hardly think of a time I haven't gone because I know we will lose. Havent been to one game this year. Pathetic but there isn't one game I could have possibly gone too even if we were 7 wins and no losses. Only went to 5 last year. I will do that easily this year after a bad start.

I know he has two years left, but he's been there for five, and this was supposed to be the year Saints really kicked on. Clearly things have gone backwards, and everyone can have their view as to why, but surely the buck ultimately stops with the head coach. Is there a different culture in Aussie Rules when it comes to hiring and firing? If he was a soccer manager in England, he'd be gone now; his feet wouldn't touch the ground. Or is the cost of paying out his contract the only thing saving him? If so, those who gave him the contract should also be accountable. Perhaps I don't understand the way it operates?
things stopping his sacking are
.2y contract extension and the $
.admin who signed the extension will look stupid.
.long club history of sacking coaches
.supporting you coach is in vogue atm
.definitely too soon in any case

All in all its too politically unpalatable to do right now. Club admin have to wait until the external pressure boils over so as to cover their own arses. End of year at the soonest is my guess. After a "thorough independent review" o_O

do you prefer it live over tv?

if the ground was closer, literally a 100m walk, would you enjoy it more?

You'd have to think that if we continue on as we are (losing to average teams by 40+ points and not winning) he will lose the playing group, if he hasn't already, and it will become an untenable situation and he'll get the flick.

So for him to still be there next year I'd say we will need to show a significant spike in form, that shows he is capable of turning this ship around, because if we don't, the damage he could do to the playing list/morale and so-on if he's lost them could be far worse than the prospect of losing two years worth of what we owe him on his contract.
My impression, as an outsider, is the coach offers no spark, passion, inspiration. Nothing to get excited about. He’s vanilla. I don’t sense any sort of imagination or creativity at all.

Tactically, he appears to do little during a game. He lost me when we played North in round 2. I was heartbroken at half time and we weren’t trailing then.

When North had the ball (which was most of the time) we had no forward structure in place. We were bursting out of defence and going sideways because there was literally nobody to kick to.

When we did kick it forward it was the high bomb to give out numbered forwards time to get back and compete. Not to receive as a moving target, but just to compete. He made no moves. Didn’t change anything at all. I left Docklands that day believing we needed a change.

He tinkers here and there but it’s groundhog day on match day. We also seem to attack wide rather than through the middle. Frightened to turn it over rather than play with dare.

Alan seems to be a respected footy person. But my impression from afar is he is out coached most weeks because he doesn’t adapt during a game. Doesn’t seem to do anything. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m no expert. But I can’t see much change coming from the coaches box to break circuits or throw the opposition off balance.

In the words of the great John Kennedy at half time in the 1975 Grand Final ‘DO SOMETHING. ACT. DON’T THINK, ACT. AT LEAST YOU CAN COME OFF AND SAY I DID SOMETHING’. Great words. I’d love to see the coach show dare and courage, even if it doesn’t work. Not sure it’s in his nature though.

Can you understand what he wants because I'm totally lost. I'm sure its boring for you because its even boring for me and you know how I like to keep going.
He threw a line that our excuse for accepting things as they are is that it was worse in the 80's and that because some of us don't want a knee jerk reaction, we are somehow pro Richo.

Now I'm pretty sure that none of us have backed him 100%.

So it's now gone totally off track to the point he's making no sense.

Also pretty sure that the 80's comment was more about people melting it was the end of the world, when it clearly isn't.

Oh well.

Surely our club cant preach stability as a reason to not sack AR.
Isnt it our stupid fault that Ross Lyon went to Freo ? ( no contract offered or not matching or something)
He’ll go if we win around 4 games. We’ve witnessed the AFL back early sackings at Brisbane & Gold Coast. We are no different. Performance is down, as will be memberships, crowd numbers & merchandise. It’s not sustainable & as stated by someone earlier, we’ll likely take losses in those sales areas which exceed the early termination payment of Richo’s contract.
