When Clarkson is unhappy he punches the wall.
When Richo is unhappy he puts on a frown.
Clarkson punches a wall Hawthorn pay for it in the change found in the coaches office couch cushions .. Richo does it we need a three week tin rattling exercise to cover materials so we could send Loewe in after hours to patch it up for us

we never had a no dickheads policy ... its always been about the low risk high reward choice for our team in regards to players... we dont have the ability to recruit a "troubled" player and have it go south on us for three reasons .
1 we will get slayed as "same old St Kilda culture" BS
2 we dont have the leaders to pull a player into line as that senior respected figure
3 we dont have the depth in the list to afford it to go south..

take Dayle Garlett .. He had issues galore , he was a great talent but there was a fair risk involved , he gets to hawthorn and while the gamble didnt pay off and he walked out of the club after mutliple issues arounf being late and turning up in an unfit state for training Hawthorn came out as hreo's for giving him a shot , they plonked him in with hodge to give him the best shot of making it and when he left they still had the list depth to cover playing one short for the whole season .. had that been us to take him on there would have been story after story on how we let him down and how the clubs culture was not strong enough to nurture such a talent now wasted because of us, he would have been rooming with one of the other kids and possibly dragged them with him , and we would have been spending hours debating how we screwed up another pick for years to come ...

Well the boys trained yesterday and had that meeting over the weekend so I reckon everyone would be on notice. I can take a loss to Adelaide, that's fine, it's just all about how we go about it.
Guess that sums up being a Saints supporter in our 5th year of a rebuild and we are hoping for a honourable loss, my guess is we will get smashed most of the year win a few games that we shouldn't when the season is done and dusted, and think we are back track

Paddy hugging every player to death like a 15 year old gacked on disco biscuits, instead of strutting around like the ********* man mountain he is.

Billings kicking a goal with nothing but relief on his face, instead of laying into the oppo muppet who coughed the ball up.

Carlisle. You were heading in the right direction until our club hung you out to dry.
See I don't get this. Carlisle came into the club, we had the shitstorm that was the snapchat saga, then his year off and when he comes back starts playing good footy and then gets into a blue on field.
Now we can sit here and claim that the club threw him under the bus. But the fact was that Carlisle decided to have a go at someone who wasn't there to defend themselves.
Amazing that so many people were disappointed that Candace Warner was targeted in sledging because us Aussies like fair sledging. Yet here we are saying that what Carlisle did was fine?

Bingo.

People on here seem to forget the absolute bath the media has given us over the years.

Hell we can't leave out Carlisle.

The club got burnt and burnt badly. The years in which we should have been getting in big memberships and sponsorships we were losing instead.

So there was to a degree the choice not to go risk. And can you blame the club?

In terms of leadership we have had players wo went through the leadership programs under GT. Why wasn't that passed on?
We now know that Roo and Joey had said no to Gatorade showers and whilst small the first win without them there and its shower time.
Were Rooey and Joey perhaps too strong on and therefore it didn't allow others to grow into those roles?
just on my feel ,
Joey and Roo were too old and too battle hardened to really be the strong peer like leaders we need , they were like their dads mates telling them what to do , its the guys in the Geary & Armo age bracket who are more the big brother type peer that need to be that leadership , Armo unfortunatly after two injury filled years needs to work on staying on the park firstly and Geary for all his leadership has never really been in the true heat of finals footy ... Gilbo should be the man but he like Brown are also perhaps out of touch with the younger fellas ... this where the disregard of the draft during the g/f years is still haunting us today those kids from the 08 09 10 draft should be giving us leadership across the lines but most are delisted not at the club or never got out of first gear ...

look i dont thing Petracca FIGJAM made us not pick him .. we needed a forward.. Roo was on decline , Bruce was a defender Tom Lee had failed we drafted on needs not personality ... and lets be clear it wasnt a long shot picking Paddy had we not he was going pick 2 so we chose one of the top two players in the draft , we just picked the one that suited our needs more

Surely though our older blokes who had those leadership qualities should have been trying to pass that on? We sit here and say that we as are lacking leadership without Joey and Rooey. Is it a stretch to say they failed in part to pass that on?

when you think about it, who are our leaders around the ball

ross - never heard him speak
steven - speaks.. sign language
armo - bit yappy
longer - points at scoreboard sometimes
newnes - nice young chap
sinclair - lets his calves do the talking
billings - prefers bashin ****s

I reckon we need dunstan in the side for that passion/leadership asap
Coffield needs to become a leader and cement a spot, has that potential written all over him
paddy needs to get vocal, fake it until you make it
I thought last year Sincs would get his possession number up if he actually called for the ball. He was always in good positions, but never opened his mouth.

Newnes would be the most vocal on field, but Ross needs to pick it up and make himself known.

I think Paddy's personality and general approach just helped reaffirm him as our choice. I remember reading something where it said we asked Paddy what he would do if another club offered him millions of dollars (in reference to Boyd), and his response was along the lines (rough memory here) of I would play for 50c, I just want to play footy.

the guys they should have been passing it on to were Tom Lynch (now at the Crows) Rhys Stanley (now at Geelong) Nick Heyne (not in AFL) Nick Winmar (in the WAFL) Will Johnson (not in AFL) Jamie Cripps (now at WCE) Sam Crocker (not in AFL) Tom Ledger (now in WAFL) Arryn Siposs (not in AFL).... these were the guys who would have near on 10 years under Rooey, Joey, Dempster and Fisher to learn off of also years under BJ, Dal, Lenny, Milne, Kosi.... these guys would be the leaders at the club now but none are here we got in the age demographic in Steven Bruce Carslie & Savage but none of them are natural leaders...

Completely agree .Saddest thing is and I am quoting this...

"Paddy is as quiet as a mouse on the field"

Now I'll bet $100 that someone like curnow is talking absolute shit the moment he crosses the line. We just need these boys to believe they belong.....
does mav bring a bit of that? carlisle the only other i can think of? maybe newnes?

gayle garlett didnt get picked up by anyone because he didnt even try to hide his issues. i mean, he was on last chance saloon, training with essendon, hoping for a list spot in the upcoming draft. he goes straight from his flight back from melbourne to perth, to northbridge in taxi. straight into a club. didnt come out until 5am.

thats why no one touched him.

hawthorn just thought they could reform him. but when he's smoking ice and coming home to a house with a young family, that suddenly isnt an option anymore. so they effectively sacked him.

He thinks we are the quietest team as a collective.

Carlisle yaps back to the opposition but no one is truly lending. He did yesterday's game and said Geelongs team is just composed. Always talking and teaching the Hawks were very much similar.

Experienced really showing he said. Called the Hawks a successful club and it shows in every facet. So left me very jealous

It shits me to tears when people go on about how we dont have any talent. Let's comapre 'talent' with this weeks hawks team compared to the one we rolled out and see who has a more talented and how far apart the performances are due to this so called talent that we are lacking.

The names in bold are the player that i rate as better (again my opinion) The line ups were taken form the AFL app on how they were names so it doesnt look like i plotted some against weaker players. Couple of 50/50 calls in Burgyone over Billings etc.

But if you have a look it works out to be 11 players from each side. Now clearly talent isnt the issue, its all the other moving parts such as coaching, structures, gameplan etc.

The two performances this week would indicate a 100 point thrashing by hawthorn.. something is not right..

FB: Geary Brown Roberton
FB: Brand Stratton O'Brien

HB: Webster Carlisle Savage
HB: Hardwick Sicily Duryea

C: Sinclair Stevens Newnes
C: Howe O'Meara Smith

HF: Acres Membrey Billings
HF: Gunston Shoenmakers Burgoyne

FF: Gresham Bruce Long
FF: Puopolo Roughhead Breust

RR: Longer Ross Steven
RR: McEvoy Mitchell Impey

B: Steele Clark Armitage McCartin
B: Burton Sheils Henderson Rioli
POTY

so what's different? why do hawthorn get the absolute best out of absolute spuds?

it tells me the performances of the players is the direct output from the environment they're in. somethings not right. it absolutely stinks.

i'm just angry

how do we fix this? feels like we have chains around our hands and feet now due to the long term contract. it sounds bigger than richo IMO

can lethlean turn it around and bring a bit of a sharper edge to the football club?

can finnis drive it or is he too nice?

Apart from Lynch, none of those players are AFL quality at all, or are as average as they come. Not sure they would add anything as leaders to the group.

cripps has been good lately. running end to end in the midfield

we couldnt even get him fit. which speaks volumes about our club. wce in one off-season had him looking the part.

ledger was the most over-rated player of all time on here

We've always had "leadership" groups...were they doing anything with them to develop them as leaders or is it just a name?

Admit to being somewhat disappointed in Newnes as I thought he would be stepping up to the plate. Now it appears no one is and I can't see Geary doing it for more than a few years.

yeah i know all this but Hawthorn have the luxury of taking a gamble like that on ... we wouldnt be as lucky .. odd on if he was in our colours we would still be defending the club against the "poor culture" jibs irrespective of Dayles previous issues

you are missing the point though ... because we disregarded the draft going all out for the flag thats the best we could muster up .. i dont blame the club i mean flags are hard to get and when one is withing reach sure you sell the farm to get it but the flow on of that is we now have no-one at the club with that 10 year experiance bracket ... we had old guys and young fellas but nothing inbetween now the old fellas are gone all we got is young guys ...

My god you really do deliberately forget or make up things to prove a point. Cripps had injuries outside the control of the footy club. He was also getting his diabetes medicine under control and by the end he was fit enough and basically played the exact same role he does with WCE now. He didn't look any different after one off season at WCE IMO and I was looking at him closely. Ledger was pathetically overrated and another reason a loss upsets people and that because most of our players are overrated by many of us on here.

He tried but was injured a lot. He is a very dedicated person and was also at the Saints.
