That's a bit if a worry stavro.....but not a total surprise.
Straight from an umpires mouth.

I just feel angry at the moment towards the Saints with everything we have watched and heard lately. I guess I demand a response from the club. Not just once off but a block of really strong performances starting this weekend .

You demanded a response? Did you ring them up? I don't mind that idea. At least they know the feelings of supporters.

I’m happy hearing this to be honest. The fact that our on field leadership is so poor however we are largely quite competitive tells me that if we get the leadership stuff right then we’ll see significant improvement on field. But how do we fix the leadership stuff?

Is Geary really that poor a captain though? I'm a bit surprised that someone who developed under one of of greatest, if not the greatest, captain in our history could be so far off the pace.

Who has said that? He is playing back pocket so he can’t organise the midfield or forward line.

We have plenty of leaders, they just need to be empowered to become them. Unfortunately they are so disengaged rn. Get GT & Lenny.
Great leaders dont wait for someone to empower them and great leaders don't get disengaged, they step up get things done fix things of their own bat

A couple of interesting things I heard in the fallout of Shock Friday.

Rooey was asked about it and said something along the lines of 'It's one thing to lead by being evrybody's friend. But sometimes you have to draw a line in the ground and demand standards.' I took that as a comment about Geary's style. Maybe he doesn't have that harsh edge to him. You know...the kind of boss nobody is scared of rather than one who when he walks onto the factory floor, everybody works a little harder.

Also Paul Roos said something like 'the Saints have to play congested pressure footy because they don't have the class on the outside, and Richo knows that'. He thought the game plan was spot on the money for the cattle we have at the moment.

So is it the coach or players?

Because if what you state is true. We don't have great players then. Because the real greats grab their teams by the scruff of the neck and drags the team with them.

The million $ question
Think we are lacking in both areas, whole club needs to put its hand and turn this around

And they were training again tonight...

Was in Moorabbin today and the car swerved left off South Rd and into Linton st late this afternoon.

I have to get my GPS re programmed.

Nothing of great note to report:

-Billy was doing laps...didn't join in with any activities.

-Playfair had most of the group doing various drills when I first arrived.

-The fowards were surprise surprise......having goal kicking practice ......the balls were flying in like bombs.......great to see....Paddy took a few very nice grabs in match simo.

-Speaking of Paddy.......I was on the fence and he was 20 feet from me....I'm no conditioning expert but he looked in great nic.

-Everyone was moving freely....you obviously wouldn't think any would have pulled up sore after the Bad Friday debacle.

That is all.
2nd session is on Thursday too.

people are starting to raise questions over the leaders within the playing group. there's been some good info posted.

the question i wanted to raise, does anyone see any similarities with what was present at carlton where richo was director of coaching (brought in to help ratten)? i re-call carlton had similar concerns when they were up and about. vaguely re-call they had some issues within the group too.

Our spleens have been vented! Onwards to the Crows game..this will be the test for coach and players. Better teams than our current list have struggled against the Crows, so some of those middle rung players will need to play out of their skins. Sad but I don't see any natural leaders in our playing list- yet another blight on the recruiters.

That’s one of your most perceptive posts!
(Among many of course).
Because of all the things we were lacking last Friday, this was the most critical.
Leadership is a really strange beast.
Some have it gifted.
Some learn it.
Some earn it.
We do have it, but unfortunately in our younger demographic.
Hence the emphasis on “stepping up”.

If I was Richo.....
My emphasis this week would be: ownership.
Our performance last week is unacceptable.
This is your team.
This is your time.
Step up.
Show the way.

And demonstrate my faith in the younger leaders, even at the cost of ignoring external noise and to my own detriment.

I reckon even great leaders need a sense of purpose & direction. Team environments are non unlike work areas where if direction is lacking it can become toxic & hard for anyone to dig themselves out of it. Imo blokes like Dunstan & Steele & even Paddy have a bunch of untapped leadership potential.

That’s around the time Judd was their captain & handed the reins to Murphy? I see where you are going with this btw but I don’t really have a position on it

But at this point in their career should Paddy or Steele be expected to be leaders of a AFL team ?
Neither have had time to cement their spot in the team let alone become leaders.
Dunstan i think this is his 5th year? and his 1st year was his best
I don't think Dunstan has the tools to be a good AFL player just my opinion

I thought Dunstan really turned the corner in the last 6 weeks of last year. I recall a number of times he stood up when we needed someone too & I also recall him shedding tears in a tough loss. Imo he’s made of the right stuff & he needs to be reinstated into the team immediately. He’s a limited player but I still think he’s good enough to be a Jordon Lewis type player.

Hope your right
Watched him against the Dees in the JLT game and just looked like the old slow 18 touches Luke and i think that's why he is being made to earn his spot again.

Agree. I think Dunstan is vital for the team from now going forward, and in my gut I think it was a mistake to leave him out of the team so far this year. He looked good in both the AFLX crap and the JLT, and should have been starting in the middle for us imo. I saw him go off in the intra with a bad ankle so unsure if that has had anything to do with anything. But like many fans I'm massively disappointed at the moment, and if Dunstan doesn't come back into the team I'll sink, rightly or wrongly, a little further.
