There are some directors which require a deeper understanding about film for you to understand their films, directors such as Lynch, Kubrick, Aronofsky, Kaufman, if you are going to the movies for pure entertainment, I would avoid these directors, if you are a die hard film buff, you can watch these kinds of movies 100 times and find new things to love about them.

Personally I quite like it. Naturally it was a film I had highly anticipated so I saw it opening day and returned the following morning to see it again. I tell ya, when that bold font of the title appeared, followed by the trademark Kubrick perpendicular compositions, it was like a like a visit from an old friend. The guy's styling is that unique.

I reckon the best way to appreciate it is to put aside seeing it as a linear narrative and instead view it as a dream - one long sleepless night in the mind of the Cruise character, as his sexual and emotional frailties are exposed. Plenty of symbolism there for those that care to look for it too.

One thing though, I do believe it would have worked just as well as a silent film, with no dialouge whatsoever, with just that creepy piano score to underline the tale.

Eyes Wide Shyte is more like it. I liked his other movies, but this was terrible pretentious garabage. Does Tom Cruise have any other facial expression apart from that cheesey grin with his fringe dangling into his eyes?

What a waste of 3 hours.

Again, if you watch movies for pure entertainment why do you bother with Kubrick?
That's a fair point.

Kubrick's movies can be entertaining, despite popular belief though. A Clockwork Orange was enjoyable, as was the 'thinking' aspect of Space Odyssey. The actual notion of sitting down to enjoy a good movie, and to be entertained isn't really Kubrick's forte, though, i take your point.

Full Metal Jacket is another which often crops up when one mentions Stanley. I'm not really a fan of FMJ or Eyes Wide Shut for that matter, but i know a few people who absolutely adored FMJ and certainly found it entertaining. I guess there are a few exceptions and it's always going to boil down to taste. [/cliche].
