Do you agree with the Aus gov's decision to purchase F-35s?

Very funny.

The destruction of much of our manufacturing industry will have long term economic ramifications.
100% agree

Its a shame the left wingers wouldn't listen to the warnings until it was too late.

Globalisation and the subsequent outsourcing to cheaper, exploitable 'third world' labour pools has been a left-wing concern for a VERY long time.

hear hear

so why would you implement policy and infrastructure that creates inefficiency knowing full well of the need for efficiency to maintain wages?

it seems one side sees problems and the other the whole picture

the military has spent nearly $400 billion dollars on the development of this monster with little to show for it. It is unable to fire its own gun until 2019 due to software issues, has a stealth mechanism that is easily detectable by 70 year-old radar and has been grounded 13 times in the last 9 years due to take-off issues. Even if the firing software is available in 2019, which is a generous estimate, it will not be able to carry sufficient ammunition.

Does New Zealand have a more realistic view of its strategic environment than Australia? Given that many hard-headed Australian strategists think that New Zealand freeloads on Australia’s security efforts, even raising such a question will strike many as preposterous.

The RNZAF operates a number of different aircraft. Visit each page for more information about each aircraft.
Must be why the economy is much better in NZ.

Regarding the stealth feature that can be detected by 70 year old equipment, that is because we have over the horizon radar as far as I know.

I amazing what good leadership and spending restraint can do.

Sorry its meant to be:

Its amazing what good leadership and spending restraint can do. Typo.
I was surprised to learn that they don't have fighter jets, not sure about submarines though.
Why spend when you can rely on Australia and USA?

That is some of the economic benefit sure. You argue what exactly are we going to do with state of the art fighter jets that even the USA has admitted will probably be the last of their line.

Talking about some of the other benefits NZ has.

so when the libs lined up to say increasing GST would do nothing for 'growth' they were lying?

more like do nothing for their polling.

"unencumbered by the likes of jaquie lambie"

they mean she cant be bought lile Colston or Harradine

now theres a dirty deal with the greens (who until now were public enemy no I) and a sneaky double dissolution.

Turnbull is resembling Fraser more and more by the day, question is whos John Howards equivalent?

Each one of which is a sitting duck to even a 1960s-era MiG fighter, and most wouldn't stand a chance against a WW2-era Spitfire or Mustang.

My point was that they are not out and about spending billions.
Surely they take their security concerns as seriously as we do, happy for us to help out?

Spending more on the military like this means that Australia might be able to stop China from making the mainland for 2 days instead of 1 day. It is completely pointless and makes no real difference if Australia ever actually had to go to war.

Most of australias recent military stuff has not invoved big iron, just peacekeeping, logistics helping out countries after natural disasters

Mostly innapropriate spending for the type of war which seems to be long gone

no they just have a brain and realise they can't compete with a country like china so they aren't going to piss away, what is now anyway? 90 billion dollars?
on non-nuclear sub's, planes that don't fly and an aircraft carrier which is used for helicopters which are having yet another upgrade just to stop them randomly catching fire.

and we think any of this is a deterrent to the Chinese?
the US has the most powerful military in the world and china clearly isn't being bullied by them.
is anyone really that dumb that they think we can have any capability of being anything but a slight annoyance to the chinese?

two week's ago we all told "OMG we don't have enough money in the budget, we will need to make further cuts in addition to all cuts to health care, higher education and medicare that abbott made."
today we're told, "another 30 billion dollars on defence? we can totally afford that"
tomorrow's announcement "so we're all going to have to make cut's in these harsh economic times, we're introducing a new breathing tax for everyone who earns under 150K"

If our government was truly concerned with chinese maneuvers in our region, you know what they should do?

Suck some chinese dick, Australian leaders have a long and illustrious history of getting on their knees and sucking the dick of any military power who makes some promises they have no intention of keeping. So * it let's suck some chinese dick, let's send the SAS into tibet, send some more into southern burma. get stuck into fighting terrorists in Xinjiang.

because any of that will be a *ton cheaper and a *ton more effective in influencing the chinese regional policy then pissing away billions and billions of dollars we don't have in tough economic times.
