i cant believe you guys who bag lance whitnal actually call your selves carlton supporters it is seriously a disgrace to bag one of carltons best players. He may be overweight ( to be a footballer ) but he finished the time trial faster than last year didnt end up coming last so what the hell do you guy want from him , its not like hes going to become 70 kg just because a couple of ********ers off a footy forum are calling him fat , guys really get a life a leave the guy alone because he has more skill then any of you'ze
....and he has a terrific football brain too.

Betts I'm concerned about more than Whitnall at this stage but even still, it is very early to be judging too harshly. I understand the plight regarding Lance in that his weight is a bit of a concern. If he is overweight at Christmas then Im worried. Lets face it he is never going to look great, even at his fittest but if he plays as well or better than last year I'll be happy.

i agree. Betts is a disgrace.

to come back looking and performing the way he did last week in the time trial should mean a stern warning: if it happens again you are out.

sorry though you cannot say betts is a bigger worry than that of Lance Whitnall...I say this as betts is a forward pocket, who come and go ever year, aos he is on 50K...Lance Whitnall on the other hand is a VITAL KPP, that is wy we need to worry...if jonanthan brown or tredrea returned from a break 5 kilograms over, it would be due to muscle mass, instead Whitnall has added 4 kilograms of lard.......I will never forget buckley saying in one of his end of season lay offs, he put kilograms on...in outtin the extra kiograms meant it was the hardest preseason of his life, to loose those extra kilogras and then make the extragains...if buckley struggled, then lance is F****d!!!

let's not make a mountain out of a mole hill, season doesn't start till April 2006

where has it been said (other than bigfooty and a few pic's on the net) the extra 4 kg was "lard" and not muscle?

All players gain in the off season. It is natural when they are not playing and training everyday. The calories are not being burnt. The diet goes a little astray. Some players generally need the rest to recover on bad knees and so on.

The point with Lance is that he needs to be as fit as he can possible be. No point comparing him to a Jon Brown as he is not that sort of player.
Lance got fit last year after not presenting himself in good condition the previous 3 years. He had a much better year.
This year he is slighly in fornt of where he was last year in fitness.

So I do not understand the problem.

I think this is the point here. It has nothing to do with professionalism but more to do with basic human physiology and the fact that the guys can't keep up that level of training all-year round. Hell look at what happens to professional athletes once they retire,.....can anybody say Billy Brownless?
