if he had to choose, why would he move to a different state away from family. Would the Hodges really move their life back to Melbourne just so he could be a Hawthorn f/s?

Feel like he’s certain to be at Brisbane if he’s good enough
Hi will be 18 - why does a family have to move to Melbourne? My nephew has had to leave home to play AFL and his family has stayed on the farm, not followed him like some groupies.

if the rule is he can choose and he chose brisbane, its not really a good look if we forced him to come to hawthorne is it?
i think deep down, hodgey will advise his son to do the right thing

We can't 'force' him to do anything.

It is entirely his choice to accept/nominate for a Hawthorn FS spot, a Lions academy spot, or neither.

(I think they can refuse an academy spot? I know they can refuse a F/S call up)

Blakey did not win multiple norm Smith's and captain multiple premierships - he was a relatively anonymous two club player (despite 300 games and premierships at Roos). Hodge would be familiar to even the most casual AFL fan and linked to the Hawks by everyone who watched our GF wins.

Not sure if AFL will step in but if not for Cooper Hodge they never will.

Maybe I just really can't stomach the thought of Hodgey's son not playing for us.
Blakey wasn't an anonymous player by any stretch. 360 odd games, over 200 at North in a very successful period. North fans hold him in very high regard.

I get your broader point, but it would be like saying Liam Shiels or Ben Stratton were anonymous players for us. I'd be fairly devastated if their gun offspring ended up elsewhere.

We would never force anyone to come!

But I’d hell hope it would put fire in the belly to smash the lions for the next 25 years!!

I've decided to treat this thread much like the Worpel contract one. Just wait. Hope.

I don’t think any poster has suggested we ‘force’ him to come to HFC !!

How do we do that ??

This is where I'm sitting with it all. It will obviously hurt if he chooses the Lions over us but I only want him at the Hawks if that's where he wants to be. We only want players that want to play for us no matter how good they are so to me it's the true test of how bad do you want to wear the mighty brown and gold.

Yes the AFL should be taking away the option for academies to outbid FS but we all know the AFL will always roll with what they want to happen.

I agree 100 per cent Blakey wasn't anonymous to North fans, and Shiels and Stratton are the perfect comparison - heart and soul players who were absolutely loved by their teamates and supporters and one of the first picked. I toi would be devastated if yheir kids went elsewhere

But they too would be relatively anonymous to casual AFL (non- Hawks) fans - particularly when compared to Luke Hodge. And sadly this is the exact type of fan the majority of the AFL media cater to, which is why I have a faint hope there might be a media pile on when someone of Luke's stature in the game has a kid go to another teams academy.
Would that be enough to sway the AFL into action? Who knows?

Hoping that Cooper winds up at our club and agree that it just seems whack that he could wind up playing somewhere else.

Personally, I'll have a soft spot for him no matter where he goes. His old man brought immense joy to my footy watching for more than a decade, and no amount of post career sour grapes will ever diminish that.

FS is an absolute lottery, and pretty much for the first time we have promising players on the list who came to us that way.

But that is also why potentially missing out on Cooper would sting, since his old man's leadership and on field heroics carved the Hodge name into the bedrock of Hawthorn Football Club history.

It still might be enough to get Cooper down to Hawthorn though, even after we shipped his old man up to Brisbane.

Fingers crossed it does.

Maybe I should show some more self control, but can we lock this thread? Or at least do an aisle clean up.

I keep seeing new posts hoping there is going to be some update on the situation or perhaps news about how he is tracking yet it's now turned into pages and pages of posters fretting over where he will end up and what role his Mum has in his decision.

I think all you are doing by constantly fretting over where he will end up is just going to set yourself up for a huge fall if he choses the Lions. We have no control over it, what ever happens, happens, focus on other things and let it play out.

For now I’d rather the Thread be on what we can control and that is talking about Coopers talent.

Draft options this time next year, it’s out of our control.

I'm in Melbourne at the moment for the weekend and FFS it is cold, so I totally get if Cooper wanted to stay in SEQ.

That said if he's any good he should play for the Hawks

It's not hard for him to look at Daicos and Darcy and others and go I should play for my Dads club.

I’m in . Melbourne at the moment as well. It really is brass monkey weather. Just came back from the Elephant and Wheelbarrow where they had a live band playing some decent music. Also came back from watching scum vs only just less scumier. Don’t ask me which is which, for my own safety had to dress incognito.

So looking forwardti watching us play tomorrow

Maybe it's only me, but perhaps the AFL will simply let the player decide which club he wishes to play for.

Then it's up to the club to work out how to it manages the draft/trade scenario.

That'd be nice.

That's how I looked at it when Bailey Scott chose to join North instead of the Suns, despite the club putting years of development into him. I figured we hadn't done enough to convince him that his future should be on the Gold Coast and obviously North offered him a more attractive option. I'm viewing Kalani White the same way as I expect him to opt to join the Dees later this year.

FWIW Ben Crawford is no longer in our academy so I don't think it's going to be a double hit of Hawthorn losing two father-son picks to Queensland clubs next year.

For comparisons sake Josh Kennedy ended up at Sydney and we all got over it. Big name at Hathorn from the past so maybe no as front of mind as Hodge but a big name in the game none the less.
