Hodge was asked about this on Agenda Setters last night by Caro and played a pretty straight bat. He did say that the Hawks have made it clear they won’t mind if he chooses Brisbane and talked up how he wouldn’t have had the development he’d had without Brisbane. Sounds genuinely 50-50.

He may not have much choice, depending on how he compares to the club’s other academy prospects over the next year — especially with the changes to academy bidding rules, which make it harder for clubs to secure all of their players.
Well lets hope so. If its a choice of leaving Brisbane where all his family and friends are to coming to Melbourne where he would be pretty much on his own in terms of family its a pretty easy decision.

This will be our only hope I think. If Brisbane have other better academy players, we are a good chance.

With the Saints kicking up a stink it could work in our favour if rules are changed in time so father son take preference to academies. But let’s face it Cooper has to want to come to us
Some crazy things I have read in this thread.
Crazy to read that people genuinely believe the afl have a vendetta against us. They absolutely don’t.
If cooper goes to the Lions ultimately a bit of this is on us as a club and let’s be really serious here - we let a champion 3 x Premiership Captain, 2 x norm smith player, 4 x premiership player and multiple AA and B&F player move to Brisbane. In fact we encouraged the move because the coach (who I absolutely love) and way too much power and thought he could win another premiership through an imported engine room.
It should never have happened to Mitchell and it should never happened with Hodge and as long as they both had a desire to play and were in good enough form they should have been afforded the opportunity to play.
As a result of him going he is now in Brisbane and his children grew up there.
Hodge loves the hawks more than he does the Lions. But doesn’t mean he doesn’t love the Lions - he was a huge foundational element for a lot of the players on the current list to develop and achieve premiership success which looks like it could continue for the next couple of years at least.
Secondly he loves his son the most, and any no good parent will ever force their kid to do something they don’t want to do - so for whoever commented that Hodge doesn’t care enough to influence his son. What a brain dead thing to say. Im sure there will be some disappointment from him deep down if he played for the lions instead of us but some Of the talk is freaking crazy here.

Definitely MC. My son goes to the same school as Cooper ( a year below ) The school has an excellent AFL program and quite a few of the boys at the school that he knows have been in the Lions Academy since 13-14. Between school, club and academy commitments they spend a heap of time together and develop a really strong bond. Sorry to put a dampener on this but if the Lions wanted Cooper I would be astounded if he didn’t choose them.

Nah he made it more like we don’t want him to feel pressured - it’s completely up to him - which is surely the right strategy for such a young kid.
The point he emphasised regardless is that there is a lot of water to flow under the bridge, no one knows if he is afl level yet.

Not having a go but you need to see the footage of Hodge talking.
He gave absolutely nothing away & if anyone thinks he did, I’d say they are only hearing what they want/not want to hear.

No offence taken. I still haven’t made the effort to find the footage but my interpretation has changed (might be wishful thinking). I’m hoping he’s talking the Lions’ academy up to eventually let them down gently.

if it was Shane Crawford's son he would be 100% coming to hawthorn ...or Peter knights ....dunstall , platten and others
if it was lethal Leigh , Jordan lewis and others there is no guarantee
it comes down to the person and their personality ......some bleed hawthorn others do not ....if his father Luke bleeds hawthorn he will come to us
Just reading between the lines based of what Luke said in that interview.
I think it’s noteworthy that he credited the local academy first when asked which way Cooper may be leaning.
