I wonder whether there is time enough for him to have a real say on the 2026 car.

100%. He starts 2 months after new regs are announced next yr. He will miss the early part but still plenty of time to have a hand in it. Wouldn't be surprised if he was kept away from 2025 R&D, and told to strictly work on 2026 car once he starts.

Last season I remember like this was 2012 where Vettel got the championship in the last race of the year.
2012 was one of the GOAT seasons for the modern era.

So many special moments that season. If you ever get the chance, you need to watch the full replay of the 2012 Brazil GP thats all onboards (mainly swaps between VET, BUT, ALO and HAM). Its insane

EDIT: I used to have it saved but think its been taken offline, but did find VET full onboards from the race, amazing when you think what happened in that opening lap

Haven't watched it all yet but seems there are some interesting little tidbits littered throughout the interview (Vettel vs Webber, Max Lewis Silverstone Crash, Abu Dhabi 2021)

hard to believe he’d downgrade the golden-haired boy but the importance of being top of the tree might be enough

“Lawrence Stroll reportedly has his sights set on an Aston Martin swoop for Max Verstappen.

Talks to make this happen are reportedly already in progress.

Italian publication Autosprint which correctly called Newey to Aston Martin claims Stroll is now ‘aiming for’ Verstappen, with a view to bringing the Dutchman in for the 2026 season.

Lance Stroll could be diverted onto Aston Martin’s World Endurance Championship programme to make space for Verstappen.

Verstappen been chirpy lately too. Saying he has probably lost the championship this year.

Ain't no way he dumps Lance. It will be Alonso that Max would replace.

But one of the main reasons Newey has been said to have chosen Aston was that he wanted to work with Fernando.
Also can't see Alonso bailing before 2026 now that Newey is on board. How many seasons he continues beyond 2026 is unknown.

Stroll senior's man goal has been to get Lance a title. Do you really think that now he has Newey on board he will drop that ambition especially when Alonso will be 45 in 2026?
I don't think that Aston Martin would trick Newey into signing on the premise that Alonso will be there in 2026, and then not hold to that agreement.

Surely that's the issue? Can't see him punting his boy unless they're convinced Alonso is running until 2028ish.

I didn't realise that Aston Martin have also signed Andy Cowell, who is meant to have been the brains behind the dominant Mercedes hybrid engine of 2014-2020.

So they have the masterminds behind arguably the best aero (Red Bull) and Engine (Mercedes) packages the sport has seen in the modern era. If Alonso still has it in 2026, he'll fancy his chances at some more race wins and even a title.

Fantastic chat with Newey. So insightful and definitely worth a listen - stick it through til the end if you can.
Covers AM, design elements of the RB18/RB19, designing the car Senna died in and many other things.

Will be interesting to see how Alonso goes with this new car incoming.

I've no doubt he's very talented but he's often spoke about in the same conversations as Lewis and Max etc. I just don't see it. Some of it is luck with where he's been at certain times but I don't know. I'm just not convinced he's quite as good as he's always made out to be.

Alot of the hype has to do with the fact that he was the one who ended Schumacher's era of dominance. There is also a lot of "what could have been" with ALO (Could have easily been a 4xWDC, missing out in 2010/2012 by a combined 9 points). ALO has always been seen as a "drivers drivers", the fact that he has driven in many other categories and pretty much dominated from the get go is a testament to his ability.

Hell, even just his performance in the 2012 season alone (which was mentioned a few pages back) is all the proof you need of his ability. He had NO business being in contention for the WDC in the final race with that absolute dog of a car that was the Ferrari F2012, but yet, there he was, going down to the final few laps.....in fact he was probably one Grosjean attack missle away from winning that year :(

TBF about the only ability he seems to lack is the ability to change/choose a team at the right time.

This reddit thread from a few years back goes over plenty of examples:
