Not sure if you have a full understanding of the history of F1 coverage but Walker and Brundle were involved in covering the full weekend and BBC and ITV provided decent coverage of the weekend when they were involved. Those guys were lucky they had one job. Commentate on what was happening in front of them.
Now the comm team have to create “content”. Not just while the weekend is on, but while there is nothing much happening.
I’m not overly happy with the comm team, apart from Martin and Bernie, but I do understand that they are employed by a British company, broadcasting mainly to a British audience. In a society that expects much, much more than just a voiceover on race day.
And last time I looked BBC and ITV were/are British organisations too. And Channel 4 currently has terrestrial rights for F1 broadcasts in the UK.
The problem is Sky and the current commentary team. And that's the team we get to see/hear via Foxtel.
Complaining about them achieves nothing.
It makes me and others who hate what is being dished up feel better so there's that.
But seriously, criticising the quality and bias of the Sky F1 coverage WILL help make changes happening, especially if its coming from Sky viewers themselves and F1 drivers and teams. F1 broadcast rights are controlled by the owners of the sport even more tightly than they were under Bernie Ecclestone. AS the criticism of Sky UK gets louder they will be heard by Liberty, especially if that criticism comes from the teams and their sponsors. That's why Max's comment about UK press being absent was so fantastic imho - this is a global sport ffs.
But apart from all that, sports journalism is like any other form of journalism in that it should not be immune to legitimate criticism from the people who consume it and pay for it via subscriptions and advertising etc.
And my comment about Rupert Murdoch falling off his perch and what that means in terms of pay TV in Australia is real. I have no doubt that Foxtel will be sold off by Lachlan Murdoch as part of restructuring if he wins control of the company from his siblings when Rupert dies. But that is the subject of a bitter dispute in a Reno Nevada probate trial currently underway.
My views. YMMV.
