Anyone interested in a closest to the pin on the FA compensations handed out tomorrow?

I'm thinking :

Goddard = Band 2
Pearce = Band 3
Chaplin = Band 4
Rivers = Band 4
Moloney = Band 4
Knights =Band 5
Byrnes = Band 5

I don't see the AFL handing out a Band 1 compo pick for a 28 yo Goddard. I reckon it would take a 25yo Goddard to get Band 1. Free Agency is for the players and i think Club compo will be on the minimal side of things.

dont they net the value?

so if melbourne lose Rivers and Moloney that is 800k per year but they signed byrnes at a guess of 300k per year, they will get compo that suits the 500k per year bracket which would be band 3/4.

Yes, but we should be able to work out how they rated each player.

Sorry but that is too simplified IMO. It would be relatively easy to get a group of 3 players out of a side with a net value of 1 mill/year, but that doesn't mean said club should get Tier 1 compensation.

I would say something along the lines of, when 2 players are grouped together as a net loss then it is only half the value of the second (lowest paid) player's contract which gets added on to the first. So if Rivers and Moloney are both worth 300k each, then their net value (assuming Melbourne don't get a player to offset the loss) would be $450k.

A 25 year old Goddard can't even be a free agent. Do people realise that unless you are over 26 you can't even be a free agent? Therefore Goddard at 27 (he's not 28) is young in free agent terms.

So Goddard is worth a quarter of what Scully is?
No, but because of the ridiculous compensation Melbourne got for Scully, the whole system has been screwed up. Going by the AFL's criteria, there is no way they can give both WB and St Kilda the same compensation for Ward and Goddard, especially when they said FA compensation will be less than the expansion clubs uncontracted signing compensation.
But since they gave Melbourne two first rounders, everything about it is now unbalanced.

I'm guessing Ward was in the 2d tier of uncontracted players, so if band 1 in FA is the same then what's the big deal?

If Dawes is worth pick 20, and Collingwood signed Lynch to replace Dawes, then surely he has more value than a pick at the end of the third round.

The AFL used age and salary as two of the main guiding points. Ward is 21, Goddard is 28. Ward is getting $750-$800k, Goddard is getting roughly $700k.
The enormous difference between their ages is the big deal, plus Ward is getting more money, and with clubs getting less compensation for FA signings compared to uncontracted signings, according to the AFL, how can they possibly end up being the same? Doesn't make any sense.

Yes you are right. I should have said a 26yo Goddard. And i was under the impression Goddard was 28. I'm sure that was reported , but i just looked it up and he is 27.

Accordingly i reckon his compo is right on the verge of Band 1 to Band 2.

I still think the AFL will be loathe to hand out Band 1 for Goddard. StKilda really didn't even put up much of a fight for him. They seem to be fighting their way out of a bit of *list mis-management atm and weren't that fussed to see him go.

I think Cloke would have been Band 1 but i just doubt whether Goddard will be.

* Not a crack at StKilda. I fully understand why they threw everything at a flag

Because the minimum age for a FA is 26, so do you suggest the only players worthy of band 1 are 26 year olds that are top 5 in the comp making $1mil a year?

Showing a bit of anti-WC bias here me thinks.

A player who represented a top 4-5 team in basically all matches in yr 2012 is worth the same as Chris Knights ? - Dont think so.

Pretty much, yes. Going by the guidelines the AFL set out. But it shouldn't be like that. Goddard should be worth a first round pick, but going by the way the AFL set it out, he should be getting less.
There is no flexibility in what they set out, and not enough bands of compensation.

But it's the first year of FA, so I guess inaccuracies should be expected. They need to clean it up though.

Band 1 compensation for Uncontracted players, presumably, kicked in around the 5 year 900k/year mark, thus why Ward was only deemed to be worth Band 2 compensation, and Scully was deemed to be worth Band 1. It wouldn't surprise me if the same kind of mark is set for the FA compensation, where a player must be offered a 4-5 year contract, with it's total worth being around the $4 million mark. Players such as Cloke/Franklin/Pendlebury would demand this kind of money as a FA, and I think A LOT of Tier 1 compensation will be handed out over the upcoming years if $700k is deemed an acceptable cut of point for said compensation.

I reckon that's how the AFL will see it.

Remember FA is for the players, not for the Clubs to clean up their list.

Compo is really only for the Clubs and Supporters to be partially offended and not totally offended.

Demons have stuffed up Free Agency. Unless they can pull a massive rabbit out of their bum in the last 24 hr. Taking Byrnes when they did - strange. Here is a link that spoke about it nearly two weeks ago.

Demons Make Massive Mistake In Free Agency Week
That site is wrong - they didn't know what we know now, that the picks don't combine. Pick 5 was never on the cards with that fact. Demons did fine.
