Again it looks as if we come up against a midfield that could impose themselves on the game. Mitchell strength is his handball and I wonder how we will counter that - do we let him get the ball and sweat off his receivers? Or stop him early and starve everybody?

The Challenge

Are we starting to hit a wall of fatigue and new kid enthusiasm dying in the cold hard autumn day? Or did we shoot ourselves in the foot with selections? Are Hawthorn really that much better than us?

Hawthorn started the year with a BANG! defeating Essendon after being 40 points down. They have since lost to Geelong , Tigers , Freo and Melbourne. I think they are similar to us that they will be inconsistent at times.

But its Clarkson - lets not beat around the bush - Hardwick might be flavour of the month but Clarkson is supreme. Its no surprise Hardwick learnt under Clarkson and got advice the night before the flag in 2017. Clarkson has smashed Adelaide and its coaches (Neil Craig excepted)

This is my fear. As with Gold Coast in some seasons, that youthful exuberance can dry up quickly once the grind of the season sets in.

Shrewd rotation of older/younger players is crucial and this is perhaps the area our club is worst at.

Still, you look at Hawthorn's team and surely they are gettable. A (proper) win on the road would be gold for our young guys.

As an aside... hopefully Brain Fartigan is back.

Adelaide about par for contested possession differential, uncontested possession differential and inside 50 differential.

Hawthorn close to lowest on contested possession differential, but close to highest for uncontested possession differential. This is normal it’s how Clarkson’s Hawks have always played.

Hawthorn however are almost the worst for inside 50 differential. This is not normal. It’s a problem offensively and defensively, they are the worst for both their own total I50s as well as opposition conceded I50s.

Keys to the game
- break even in the midfield contest
- strong defensive energy from Murphy, McHenry and McAdam to stop any quick counters and force them to play slow
- more than 20 possessions for Smith, Sholl and Schoenberg (and fewer than 20 for Keays) to use our skilled players to unpick the Hawks defence

That prelim final was epic. Tex's grenade from outside 50m at HT to give us the lead was a legendary moment in Crows Finals highlights.

No one gave us a chance, in an alternate universe with neutral unbiased umpires we win that game and beat our bitches at the time, Sydney in the GF at the G.

You don't want to overreact to a loss. Consistency is more important. Yes we have played crap two weeks in a row, but that's not the point. Anytime you can get your experienced players on the field you simply have to do it. Even if they can barely run.
I'm half expecting Lynch to start the game in a wheelchair.

The old AFC approach.

Pick your experienced players as much as possible.
Back them in to respond.
Don't panic and wield the axe.
Only make forced changes to injured players that can't at least walk.
Blame and then drop the kids once forced to make changes.
Bring back any injured experienced player asap. Even if half fit. Drop a kid to do it wherever possible.

It's hilarious that Smith is on TV encouraging the kids to put their hands up for a rest when their body isn't up to it. Where do these double standards come from? They've seen Tex, Sloane and Talia do it last year and Lynch can barely jog at the moment. Is he conditioning us? If so, there's no need, we know our juniors get put on ice as senior players return from injury and other seniors continue to play under duress.
