You would think you would give the people what they want.

That said, they voted for him, not having Gay marriage was part of his policy when elected so he technically doing what he was voted for.
Could this be the only election promise he's kept?

I've rarely seen society shift this quickly. Makes an old **** very happy.
Its why the legalization of it in America is such a huge deal.

Whether you like it or not, but America strongly dictates the Western media here in Australia, which trickles down to influencing society.

Before this occurred, if you had asked me if same sex marriage was possible, I probably would have said yes but unsure when.

Now that America has done it, it has certainly paved the way for Australia, moreso than any other country.

Sure, I knew that. Just didn't think his belief influenced policy that much.
I think his sister is gay as well?

I'm not sure as I don't follow news or politics here, but I may have briefly heard it while the telly was on...

I dont think they deemed it that important. A poll from voters a couple of years ago suggested as much. Seems to be a massive push now to get it through since other countries have done it. Abbott personally doesn't support it because of his religion but said the party will discuss it and vote amongst themselves at some point. His lesbian sister said it will change soon and Tony wont contest it if the party votes in favour of it.

haha Maybe. Did get rid of the Carbon tax and tried to improve the budget (in a poor way though)
It's a nice change of pace in many respects.
Indeed. Be interesting when the election comes around again though

I don't know why it bothers people so much. A lot of folks have gay friends and are showing support & solidarity, others are just happy that society as a whole is progressing.

It's a lame and empty gesture, yes, but it's kind hearted and well intentioned.
Yeah it's better than the few minority idiots that rant on how hard it is to be male, middle class, white and straight. Thankfully they are in the minority though.

When is the next election? My wife hates Abbott so much that she's waiting until he goes before getting our boys citizenship.

On or before January 14, 2017 - so 18 months or so.

The rainbow thing doesn't really bother me. I did like this one though;

I don't Facebook but have noticed it on Twitter, and despite the overwhelming lameness of the gesture, it makes me smile to see how far we've come in twenty years.

I'm genuinely ashamed that we weren't one of the leaders in this; it's disgraceful that we'll end up doing it due to the fact everyone else has, and not because it's the right thing to do.

I don't use FB enough to bother anymore, but, if I did, I'd consider doing the rainbow thing.

Any show of support and public weight of opinion that can help get us down the right path, no matter how slowly, is worthwhile; and showing homos that they're supported and most of us don't see a difference between them and Heteros, can't be a bad thing.

I voted for them; as above, lagging on this is a national disgrace.

I've thought about this a lot over the last day or two, and have come to the conclusion that AIDS was the game changer. In 1980 the gay rights movement was a social phenomena, pride parades, bath houses, and f***ing, but outside of places like Sydney or San Fransisco, the vast majority of gays were closeted. Then AIDS came along, and by some epidemiological quirk people were forced to come out to families, and the gay rights movement was forced to become political as governments chose to ignore the gay men, drug addicts, and Haitians oddly (old **** joke, What's the hardest thing about telling your wife you have AIDS? Convincing her your Haitian) dying in their thousands. When Rock Hudson came out, and admitted he had AIDS, that was the moment the gay rights movement hit the mainstream, he was a buddy of the Reagans FFS, how can he be gay? And what happened in the US yesterday, while unseen at the time, became inevitable.

Honestly, what kind of people would give a flying f*ck about what another person does with their personal life. A dude shaggin' a dude or a girl shaggin' a girl has absolutely zero impact on my life. The fact that there's a need for the argument says a lot about society "I don't think it should be allowed because it's not what my faith says or what I, or my family was brought up with. It devalues my marriage".

Get over yourself, humans.

Looking at those people who have changed their profile pics to celebrate, they would have difficulty understanding there is a difference between Australia and the United States. I understand America has a large cultural influence on the rest of the world but this is an American (and gay) achievement. I will save my token gesture for when Australia makes the step forward.

you obviously seem to give a flying f*ck....

Everyone else is legalizing gay marriage and weed, and we're just sitting here censoring the internet.

And rolling out an inferior NBN network, while we have sham inquiries into 'Certified food' (basically an open slather for anti-Muslim sentiment) and wind farms.

What's the point of a 'faster' NBN network if they ban torrent sites?

What the hell is going on. Some guy has his birthday today and I got a message sent to me from Facebook to my tablet mobile number informing me of this. I haven't had this happen before; why?
