On the left hand side of the box where you type your message, there is a hyperlink saying "Smilies Legend" which explains the basic ones. I;m sure somebody will post the link to the site where the livelier ones come from.

One thing I can't figure out though, is why it sometimes says "your message can't be processed because blah blah blah something about 8 smileys" when in actual fact it only lets you do 6.
