Have been intrigued by this guy's potential for a little while, since he debuted for the Windies in ODIs last year. Seems to be cut from the Dre Russell / Keiron Pollard mould, but hopefully fitness, drive and the notorious WICB allow him a bit more of a crack at the long form of the game, too.

Has only been given a limited amount of FC experience so far, a big problem with some of those other guys is that they get into the hamster wheel of franchise cricket before they have even had a chance to really nail down a claim at test cricket, let alone get picked regularly. Hopefully that changes with Powell because he can obviously play.

For all the talk about the decline of West Indian cricket, they still produce some outstanding talent in the all-rounder department.

The talent part is the constant.

You just need to watch some of these blokes bat at their best for half an hour to realise how good they are. Blackwood is an amazing talent, plays some phenomenal shots. But the decline of their system means that his mental ability hasn't improved one iota in 3 years

A sad state of affairs with West Indies cricket.

They have a nucleus there of some quality young test batsmen in Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo and Jermain Blackwood. Shai Hope has also been a bit of a revelation lately. I don't know the full reasons behind whats happened in the past 20 years but The WICB though has been a bit of a comedy routine with the amount of fallouts and pay disputes.

Imagine a test team now with Chris Gayle, Narine, Russell & Dwayne Bravo? All have made livings off T20 nowadays but the Windies could still have a very strong team in all 3 formats.

Short answer in terms of the last 3 years:
Dave Cameron. The man is a cancer.

A big reason why Russell hasn't played more First Class and Test cricket is his health. He has pretty bad knees, and apparently his body can't physically stand 5 days of cricket. He'd be breaking down constantly and costing himself the opportunity to play any cricket and earn any income if he kept trying to push through FC/Test matches.

"A Test match, you are talking about almost 20 overs per day. My knees and my body, whenever I tried playing first-class cricket back home, I can't complete a game without coming off the field, icing somewhere, getting pain, taking injections, pills. I can't play a full game without doing all of those things."

Russell said if he was fit he would "surely be bowling 145-plus" for West Indies in Tests.

"What should I do? Stay home? I still want to play cricket. I play with a lot of pain here and there."

Its probably why he's a drug cheat so he can recover quicker.

Fair point.

It's something that gets overlooked a lot with talk of PEDs too - they're mostly used to improve/speed up recovery for training and games.

Yeah with the insane sort of schedule globetrotting T20 pro's put themselves up for I am surprised that there hasn't been more cases of this - particularly given the majority of players who pursue that route are past their physical prime.

That and recovery from bedding 30 women per tournament.
