Fake Crowd Noise on 'Empty Stadium' telecasts -- yeah why not?

I’ve been watching the rugby so have got useD to it. I must admit I thought I would hate it with the footy but this shits all over rd 1 to watch

Don’t think they’re doing crowd noise as well as the NRL.

The tarps and ‘cheer squads’ are horrendous.

Pick venues without stands and put non playing players behind the goals (if and when allowed). This is just distracting.

Fake noise does nothing for me. Actually distracts me from feeling ebbs and flows of actual game to some extent, although only watched a few minutes of tonight's game. I remember the first weekend of no crowds back in March I watched the women's game between Carlton and someone else and despite no crowd the noise of players and other club staff cheering each other on, still gave me a sense off genuine ebb and flow of game situation. I'd prefer that, than this.

I thought it would sound OK but be fundamentally wrong and not quite as good as the real thing. I gave them way too much credit. Horrendous execution.

The only thing I've had an issue with is that the crowd usually starts cheering before I can tell if it's a goal on TV, which tells me it's a goal. Every kick on goal at the moment sounds like one bending back and maaaaybe going to hit the post

Not an easy task for sure but they have to do better if they are going to persist with it.

Spot on. This is exactly what I wanted to address with creating https://sofacheer.com.

Unfortunately, I am struggling with the chicken and egg problem. No one wants to be the early adopter to a crowd noise website, but I need lots of people on to attract people to the product. I am open to suggestions!

The tarps look ridiculous they move around all over the place and are very very distracting.

The NRL have it easier as they can have tight in shots where you don't see the stands, so the fake Corowa noise sounds plausible. The tight shots are not possible for the AFL, so we are regularly hearing the fake crowd and actually seeing there is no crowd.

To me, this speaks volumes about the myth of AFL needing to be 'attractive'.


Clearly, unequivocally our game is ****ing boring and dull to watch as a sport.

What makes it interesting, is the tribalism and passion.

Without that, it's borderline rubbish at worst. At best, nowhere near as entertaining as most other sports.


Hopefully the AFL realise this finally.

Loving the fake sounds, but their recordings have a clear umpires whistle in it, which can be heard every few minutes.

I like it!!
I also like that it adds an almost wacky cartoonish element to the game.
Some other recommendations,
Those that remember Batman and robin, with an ‘Oof! When a player kicks the ball and ‘6 coins gained animations etc etc..get Rex Hunt and Tony Leonard as the callers with Tony Martin in deep voice for special comments and that’s Entertainment.
