It would be great for the comp if they were better and got bigger crowds but I don't see the issue here at all. They are fitzroy and St Kilda the two Melbourne teams.
The Scorchers and the Sixers are the blockbuster teams and have been since the BBL started.
Why is this a problem?

Victoria won 4/6 big bash titles before the Franchise cricket, so it was natural that it would cycle to other states winning eventually.

Seems strange to me they usually leave Christmas Eve empty. Got an in-built Friday-Saturday evening feel. "The players deserve Christmas off" doesn't stop them making them travel on Christmas Day for Boxing Day.

Mostly Column A, a bit of Column B.
The Scorchers have barely had any international "names" since Herschelle Gibbs and still draw big crowds. Fans go to watch their team and hopefully watch them win. The Stars had crowds because they were a competitive side then, having a big names might give you a sugar hit but people will see through it quickly if the team is crap.

Having been to the AO Tennis and F1, anecdotally I do think a lot there are a lot more theatregoer types in Melbourne and Sydney that will only turn up because it's cool to be there and not to support the team. I'm sure the Melbourne Cup is the same. Eddiesmith seems to be another one. But the main thing is they suck

As a former resident of both Sin City & Yarra - i can assure you the Theatre Goers reside in the north and the rusted on in the South. In early ‘96 my girl and i would rock up to the SCG at 1pm for a 1.10pm start and sit wherever we liked. 16 rounds later you had to book your tickets three week in advance and queue for an hour to get in.

Stars will continue to get enough because they play at the MCG.

it's nonsense though. why is a team flying to perth (because they always have a home game on Boxing Day) on xmas day any better than just playing a game? It's very silly from all parties involved and it should have been resolved years ago. You just do either a Sydney derby or a Melbourne derby.

I never said it wasn't, I just said the Blast is the one I enjoy watching the most because unlike the IPL, it doesn't get bogged down in DRS reviews, games are done in 3 hours and there's a more healthy contest between bat and ball.

FWIW it looks like Alistair Dobson may move to takeover the US T20 comp. Todd Greenberg played Grade at Randwick in the 90’s - so at least he has a cricket pedigree but he’s got a big job in front of him.

Yeah, it was part of the reduction in games. The question is why ditch the Christmas Eve game instead of one of the many other ways of cutting a game out of the schedule.

I would have had the Sixers host the Spuds in a day game on Christmas eve with the Scorchers home game being the only match on Boxing Day. A full day of test cricket and 2 BBL games is overkill if you're likely to watch both like me.

The BBL is clearly way behind the IPL, Australians have been slow on the uptake with this competition. Dreadful playing surfaces and pitches and its top players not being available hasn't helped. In the 1980s and 90s we were top of the tree with the One Day Tri series, but we've let things slip dramatically with the world wide rise of T20. Cricket Australia has some thinking to do with its scheduling and groundskeepers need to produce "roads". People want to see sixes not wickets, the bowlers get their chances in TEST cricket but T20 is all about big hitting and runs! It's a completely different game. I don't particularly like T20, but it's what fans want for now, not sure how long that will be in Australia as attendances have fallen away also?

I don't really agree about the need to produce roads.

Sure the average IPL fan would probably prefer roads and huge scores.

I don't think I'm alone in liking it when there's a bit in the pitch for both teams and its a bit of an arm wrestle.

They have already brought the boundaries in to ridiculous sizes.

If you keep providing flat pitches with tiny boundaries, you might as well just set up a bowling machine from one end and let the players just tee off.

I’d say the main argument against a derby is it would be a made for TV game with poor crowd attendance and the derby’s are their big crowd attractions.
