Might as well go day 1. There shouldn't really be that many problems that the game is unplayable without a patch.

Uncut Exploration Gameplay

I heard a rumour about the story of your character background and the demo seems to indicate it's the case. I advise to not watch the video if you are concerned about spoilers. Or at least skip the part between looking at the pip boy and when the shooting at the enemy (1:05~2:24).

The rumour of the character background is

that he was cryogenically frozen in the vault. This should lead into a interesting story. How a person from the "old world" will adapt to the current post apocalyptic world

Obviously you'll find this out early in the game or possibly even from reading the back of the games cover.
