Why has the general consensus on this game become very negative? Is it that bad?

I think the Fallout games have always appealed to a hard-core gamer and they're disappointed it isn't the video equivalent of the second coming.

I love it and I'm level 57 and I'm still having a great time, but with everything on the internet there's always going to be negativity.

My biggest issue was it just became far too easy. I got my ass handed to me at that very first raider place you go to. I no time at all I was one shooting everything on the hardest difficulty. The hardest part for me was struggling through the pathetic story.

The game is 88 on metacritic so "general consensus " is a bit of a misnomer

There has been some criticism of some aspects. The story isn't strong. Its hard to play an evil character, which is a big pull of fallout games. The dialogue system has been nerfed, and the skill/character building has been simplified. There are the usual bethesda bugs and the building system is pretty hard to deal with.

Which makes it sound awful i guess but i still rate it goty and have put 150 hours into it. It is a fantastic game with some rough edges

Without a doubt the game delivered. I look forward to the first DLC so I can boot it up again.

Yeah it started off great but once it became easy as all open world games do eventually (except dark souls etc...?), it just doesn't have the story line to keep me engaged. I have just gone back to playing witcher to finish off side quest and the expansions and I must say it is a much better game

Because everyone hyped it up to the point that anything less than perfect made it a shit game. It has bugs, it has issues, it has things that could have been done a lot better, but it's still a great game that seems to have a fair bit of re-playability.

Yeah it was the first Fallout game I have played more then a few hours. After all the hype that comes with this series I can see how it leaves people a little underwhelmed. Basically it is just a solid game that is pretty fun

* Shooting game mechanics = average
* Graphic's = Average
* Storyline = Poor
* Side quests = Great
* Open World looting = Great
* Weapon variety = Great

I feel it is the side questing & general looting that makes this game enjoyable. Once that becomes a grind then it starts losing appeal

What makes the shooting mechanics average in your opinion?

I enjoyed the Fallout 3 and New Vegas (never played 1, 2, or Tactics). For me.......

Shooting game mechanics = Good (that part of it has a much better feel than the others)
Graphics = Good (Fallout has never been about spectacular graphics, but they look fine and shouldn't date too much)
Storyline = Below average (I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's not as good as the others)
Side quests = Good
Open World looting = Good
Weapon variety = Great (the new mod system is a nice feature)

The biggest knock for me so far is the lack of variety in missions, there's way too much "Go here, kill everything, come back", especially with the constant "A settlement needs our help" BS. I'll finish this play-through and try it again taking another path before I can it, but it's a good game that's already chewed up a lot of hours.

Got my platinum last week - that trophy for getting a settlement to 100 happiness was a pain. Probably won't touch the game again unless there's some good DLC :p

Yep for a fallout game the shooting mechanics were fantastic. So far ahead of anything else in the series. Massive plus for me

Yeah that's what I thought too. Wonder why others don't rate it highly.

Probably people who compare it to mechanics in a non sandbox fps

I've had Deacon following me around lately, did you have to finish the story before you got his perk?

Why has the general consensus on this game become very negative? Is it that bad?

The main issues I've seen from people with regards to a negative experience generally comes from this game not doing enough to differentiate itself from the previous Fallout games (but what would be the bet if they changed it too much there'd be everyone bitching about how it should go back to it's routes and what made Fallout, Fallout...).

From my experience, this game did exactly what I wanted it to do. Create an open world, rife for exploring, with solid gunplay mechanics.

I think to an extent a lot of your overall feeling about the game will somewhat be formed by your past experiences with Fallout (if any). I think the faults likely become somewhat easier to pinpoint. For example, I didn't really care that the dialogue tree didn't explain to me what was going to be said. Nor did I care that I couldn't play the 'bad guy' (as I'm only ever going to play through this game once - which will always be as a good guy).

Generally speaking with regards to bugs or issues, I didn't really run into much of anything that caused frustration. I had a few crashes, but all were within a minute or two of saving (the save system is really good this time around). And otherwise, the bugs I ran into were some weird floating bodies or glitch outs upon death. Nothing major.

I got at least 130ish hours out of it before it started to grind, and that was mainly due to just focusing on the main story and not doing what I had done the previous 130 hours which was just explore the wasteland.

If I were to compare this game directly to The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4's strengths comparative to that game (which I rate higher than Fallout 4 overall). I'd say that Fallout's biggest strength is the exploration of the world, which is incredibly deep. The loot is always meaningful. Whereas The Witcher is all the about the people, the experiences within the world (quests, side quests and random events) more than the exploration of the actual world (which is still fun - just not as well done as Fallout 4). Everything in The Witcher feels acted and fleshed out when it comes to anything with a story beat, Fallout deadpans a lot of it which doesn't offer the same heart and emotion that The Witcher does. I feel that most of the heart and emotion in Fallout comes with the depth of every environment that you explore and enter, there's way more to those than there ever is in the story beats.

I wanted non-sandbox FPS mechanics (because why can't a sandbox game have the same controlling mechanics?!) and that's what I felt I got. MASSIVE improvement over Fallout 3, which I deemed effectively unplayable with the gunplay mechanics.

Did anyone else have multiple love interests in their games? I think I had Piper, Curie and Cait plus I had the chance to get Danze but I friend-zoned him at the final hurdle lol. They all chill out at the Red Rocket too - awkward! :D

No got his ages ago, well before finishing the story. He was pretty quick tbh, don't think he even had a questline?

I've got him to admire me so far, he seems to like the lock picking and hacking but haven't found anything he loves yet. Will persevere then, cheers.

Basically you just need to treat synths with compassion. If any opportunity comes up in conversation that humanises a synth, he'll love it.

Otherwise basically lockpicking, hacking and sweet talking people.

Could have had about 4, but stuck by Cait....until i boned piper :D

I keep them at different settlements so its all good

I basically flirted with everyone when the option presented itself just for the extra experience from the speech challenges haha. :cool:

Same, right up to the romance option.

Then i was like "You'll always be my best friend"

Opinions etc but IMO the only massive legit knock on this game is it isn't really an RPG. To me the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games (obviously excluding 1 and 2) are just a massive sand box for you to go crazy in and the story is just a flimsy pretense for you to be there. You're the one that writes the story as you play. Sure there have been exceptions where some stories of these games have been better than others but none have been stellar. They have nailed almost everything else in this game.
