I think it's a fair opinion after 30 odd years of the same old crap.

My opinion is different, the players have shown they can turn it around when they need to which they did last year at 3-10.

Again this year the wheels were wobbling early on and about to fall off but to their credit they turned it around and nearly had a top 4 spot.

The pressure is on again, as it should be, so I hope that with Lids and Titch back we steer away from the familiar waters of disappointment, make the finals and win at least the first round and go deep into September.

Yep stuff this. I'm off to buy a Carlton membership so I can get in early on the rebuild and say I was there in the hard times.

Carlton? *shudder* Some things shouldn't be said, even as a joke.

Laugh all you want but it's actually a reasonable concern..

For mine it's not that I don't think we're tracking in the right direction it's more that I just see better young & developing talent at other clubs.

Could be a case of the grass being greener on the other side or it could be that I'm paranoid after years of let downs.. But I do still have concerns that we're gonna wallow in no man's land again (mid table)..

And decisions like signing Taylor Hunt for two more years does nothing to put my mind at ease....

But all we can do is front up each year, pay our memberships (interstate in my case) and watch it all unfold..

We lost Grimes in the first quarter, Conca screwed his hammy again and Hammer played a full game. We effectively had a bench of one during the crows game. Bit harsh.
Agree. When players go down that are important,it affects the whole playing group and Richmond were mentally down all game.
Conca can't take a break. :(

Great player but stuffed by injury.
Like Chris Knights.

Can't help bad luck.

We beat the Hawks fair and square despite the media saying "they were down" for the 11th time.

Gold Coast will have a "down" game this week also.

I'm as pessimistic as anyone, but it's not a false dawn. We have the defensive aspect sewn up. That's the hardest part.
We just need to tinker with the game plan to up our scoring and get Yarran in as a small forward and we'll be right to go again. Not this year, but onwards.

We can't afford to not turn up for games. The effort on Friday was pathetic and we should have lost that game by 100 points..! it was that embarrassing. Having said that, it was an off night and the boys will come out firing and beat GC comfortably. Pies will be tough but i am again confident of us beating norf..!

Pies are shit! If we don't beat them, I don't want to play finals.

i dont see us having a false dawn. We have tracked well and set ourselves up well over the last few years to really keep ourselves away from the foot of the table for the next decade. What we have done is stagnated somewhat this year as we are still not attracting big name players. if we can get a few big names in the next year or two (and i feel that we can exploit the future draft picks trading now) we can really set ourselves up for a crack in the next 2-3 years.

we have sufficient depth now to not need to get role players

Depends on if we capitalise on our current spot by doing the right things over this and possibly the next pre-season.
A couple of holes in the list (small forward, another ruck + strong inside mid) and the coaching leadership group pulling the team up one more notch and at the same time minimising the odd brain-fart game like v the Demons and end of Freo game 2 will place us top 4 IMO for the next 2 - 4 years.

From there it comes down to a touch of game day luck and manic player effort every week.

Its not a false dawn imo, the correct structures are in place at the club and Benny and Peggy are driving us in the right direction.
Whether or not we win the ultimate prize isnt the final judgement imo, as they have had to rebuild in the middle of expansion clubs stealing alot of draft picks.

The definition of false dawn was the end of 2008 and the 2009 pre season .......round 1 2009 brought night very quickly....

Closely followed by the false dawn of 2005 .....round 7 brown broken leg killed that one off.

Suffice to say where we are now is nowhere near those days ... Much better equipped on and off field

What is this even supposed to signify?

I thought the graph (which was borrowed from some random stockbroking education site) neatly plotted our last eight games: Against West Coast, Sydney, GWS, Carlton, St Kilda, Fremantle, Hawthorn, and Adelaide with the "dead cat bounce" game coming against Hawthorn, ie. Our season looked alive (with the bounce) but was actually dead (as the Adelaide game showed)

The trouble is, none of Hardwick's six seasons have been massively more successful than 2008 (where we won 11-1/2 games), yet people run around every year saying how we are in better shape. In fact, if I recall correctly, it was about this time in 2008 that we had a spectacularly awful game in Adelaide against Adelaide that put us out of business.

Round 19, 2008: Adelaide 16.12 (108) def. Richmond 6.9 (45)

Round 19, 2015: Adelaide 11.22 (88) def. Richmond 8.4 (52)

If Hardwick was to be sacked at the end of the yr, for what ever reason. The new coach would have plenty to work with.
Cant say this has been the case for a long long time. I dont believe in dawns and rebuilds. Footy clubs are a work in progress it is a cycle that never stops.

What are we talking about here.
Well it seems to me some are confident we aren't that far away and are a top 6 side. Just a few more good players will see us challenge for a flag.

Others like myself think we are a middling side 7 -12. Good on our day and good when games are on our terms. Capable of competing with all sides.
For me a serious lack of depth, a lack of quality spread thru the side, Too big a reliance on too few, and finally really lacking in some very important areas are our problems and these problems are preventing us from going to a new level.

Imo we lack a second key forward, we lack a second key defender, we are screaming out for a second ruckman who would be capable of taking over from Ivan. We need more mids especially a big inside contested ball winning beast. We desperately need some genuine highly skilled super quick running machines who can play on the wings or come of h/b. We need a well rounded quick hard at it sml/med defender who wont panic under pressure. And of course we are screaming out for not one but two classy super quick goal kicking sml/med forwards.
To go to the next level we really do need to be looking to upgrade the players we have in these positions. I think the vast majority know this. Trouble is even talk of cutting players, most of whom have performed poorly or are deficient in too many areas fail in big games too many people get up in arms.

Then theres some, very few who think we are not that far away from becoming a bottom side 13 - 18. To be fair to these few people, the reality is there is not that big a gap from say 5th right thru to 17th.
I think while our depth is stretched so thin if we were to lose 4 of our better players we would drop away to a level where just competing against sides is all we could expect in effect we would become a bottom side 13 - 18. So imo it is a thin line we tread and not just us.
