Famous DT Coaches Thread 2011 (Part 1)

Re: Famous DT Coaches Thread (Part 2)

The last three posts of Part 1 to keep the discussion flowing....

Cheers bro, I've been a massive fan of both H.Shaw and Adcock for a number of years and whilst they've burnt me in the past I feel as though if I hold grudges it could be to my detriment. For whatever reason I didn't get Malceski last year, I was close to getting him but I viewed him as a SC specialist and I had him in my SC team the year before and held him for the entire year. Obviously both decisions in those years hurt my ranking a fair bit, so yeah I think its best if you can try and take the emotion out of picking your starting squad and trading which can be hard.

I'm definitely not going to be ticking Adcock/H.Shaw as passes/successes yet because what I've learnt already this year is that some players (undurable ones ala Higgins/J.Grimes) as much as you want them to change, don't change.

I find it incredibly hard at times to do trades with hindsight and when a keeper/premium loses a lot of cash. I actually intended to make the Broughton to Adcock trade the week before I did but because I put a social occasion first I lost track of time and when I checked my phone to make the trade it was 7:39 PM. I lost 44 points and around 45K because of that and as much as I wanted to hold onto Broughton so he could come good and rectifying holding onto him/not doing the trade I just pulled the trigger. I've gained 67 points and probably $50K odd but the money part of it is hard to calculate.

But yeah what I've learnt is if that you let emotions/stupid reasoning (he will come good, he has already lost too much cash, I don't like watching that player play etc.) get to your head you just lose more and more points.

What some people forget about unique picks is that they are a double edged sword. Yes if the player comes off it can boost your rankings, however if it doesn't the reverse will happen and you will plummet down the rankings. I know this is said a lot but I'll say it again unique players are unique for a reason, that is the other aspect you have to think about. I've taken what I consider quite a few unique risks this year and all the ones that have failed in hindsight would have paid off if I held onto them/I didn't get a bit unlucky (Buckley, Iles, Coad, Bewick etc.).

RE: unique pick my advice is just be careful, make sure you don't cross the fine line between reasonable and unreasonable unique pick and also don't pull the trigger until things (form, injury, price etc.) look really bad because some people can find it very easy to get trigger happy.

Anyways hopefully that helps, good luck to your team this week and for the rest of the year.

Laider => Shaw, $3,800 left

That was it for me. The Shaw trade was staring everyone (who didn't have him) in the face, I thought. Geelong don't forward tag or forward press, Shaw was always going to dominate regardless of the result. Instant reward, happy days.

There were a heap of cows I could have cashed out this week but I decided to hold off. Considered Patrick but worried about his JS and his scoring ability when GC lose. Can wait for Jacobs, Puopolo, Hibberd etc for the next couple of weeks. I have noticed that my 17 trades before this week were at the low end of the norm, so I'm happy not to burn another two this week.

Went Curnow to Isaac Smith. To gain me a lot of coin. Was tossing up between him and Jacobs, but Jacobs will come in next week probably.

The dropped Grimes for Shaw. Good first up score! Everyone else looked hideous. Wasn't going to go to Rawlings, Suckling, etc. Enright is on the radar, but in a couple of weeks. Shaw's BE was the clincher for me.

Soft option. Wanted to go bang with a midfielder but my backs needed A LOT of work

Fairly straightforward trades structurally, but unique in terms of players picked. God knows I need them to work out:

Grimes --> Murphy
Curnow --> Pavlich

Murphy completes a unique DP linkage with Johnson.

Will look at Matera --> I Smith next week and bring Pav into the forwards.

Out: Grimes
In: Puopolo
Out: Curnow
In: Delideo
(Swap Lids and Gibbs for this week)

Will bring Jacob and/or Hibberd into my backs in the following weeks to allow Lids to move permiently into the backs. Reason I put Lids in the middle is I wanted to have the extra defender in Puopolo.

Will consider Smith next week.

Re: Famous DT Coaches Thread (Part 2)

looks a pretty good trade, in that it gets you a guy you really can't do without (Boyd). major upgrade.

Jacobs hasn't played a game yet though? ballsy or risky?

Jacobs was a player that many earmarked during preseason as someone who could be a solid DTer, he was even more popular given his Back/Centre eligibility. That was all until he got glandular fever and was due to miss the first 10 rounds or so of the season. He's been doing extremely well in the SANFL so he was definately going to feature for PA as soon as the club felt he was fit enough to compete at AFL level.

Given the lack of midfield downgrade options my original plan was actually to bring Jacobs in around now whether he was playing for PA or not. The Grimes injury obviously meant I had to alter my plans a little (serves me right for trying to plan trades in advance). Given the lack of high scoring backs, someone averaging 70-75 might be good enough to actually start for the short-medium term, perhaps even the long term.

I had two options I was seriously considering this week. I could go Grimes to Jacobs and then Curnow to a gun mid and then pray Hibberd was a late in in order to avoid a zero, or I could go Curwnow to Jacobs then swap him with Gibbs (DP) and then upgrade Toy to Rawlings in order to avoid copping the zero. I thought that if i traded to avoid the zero I might not actually be THAT much better off, check out the following example:

If I did Curnow to Jacobs or Grimes to Jacobs and then Toy to Rawlings, id then be forced to start Bewick in my mids this week. So the choice was basically between the following:

Bewick + Rawlings

vs

Boyd + Donut

So i thought Bewick may get a 50 and Rawlings may get 80-90. Boyd might get 120. So even if i was to cop the donut, I might not be that much worse off for this week and id be in better shape goign forward. As it turns out Rawlings put up a dud score and Hibberd ended up being a late in, so i got VERY lucky there. I think a lot of people (myself included) get scared by donuts and subsequently do trades in order to avoid them, trades that may not be beneficial for their side in the long term. It's a psychological thing I think. Even though the guy who you'd play in oder to avoid the donut might only give you say 40 points, the notion of playing one down is often too painful to allow.

Scoring power is where it's at imo. My relative success in previous seasons has almost always been on the back of getting in the premium midfielders as fast as i can. If i'm going to claw my way back to a respectable ranking, it will again be on the back of these guys who invariably are the backbones of a big scoring week. So Boyd came in this week and i'm going to have to decide in the next 2-3 weeks If i'll try to put together a "flush" by going with that 6th premium mid or if i'll try and improve my backline. Chappy also is going to be at a tasty price very soon.

So I guess in answer to your question about Jacobs, I don't consider to be that risky. Barring injury I think he'll get a good run in this PA side. Mzungu is the next one i'll be keeping an eye out for. The first sign that shows he isn't too far away, i'll bring him in.

Re: Famous DT Coaches Thread (Part 2)

My thought on trading this week is that, since I have been getting premiums in the last two weeks and have only $3,800 in hand, time to load up on cash.

Lower => Puopolo
Heppell => Hibberd
$308,300 in kitty, 14 trades left

I know Heppell is a potential keeper as a B7/8, but I'm tipping he's going to get a rest or a red vest soon. I don't trust him to stand up all year. Now is the time to make bank if you are going to do so given his BE of 91.

Now is also the time to do forward planning for your trades. After R9 I'm looking at Tapscott and Swallow out for two of GAJ, Hodge, Pav or Chappy. Of course, if I did that I'd be missing out on Lynch (GC) and Breust who will be on the bubble. Might wait an extra week on Chappy to drop his price into range after his recent poor scores.

Interesting to see a clear preference for Pav ahead of his team-mate Fyfe among the DTFCs. If in doubt, stick with what you know?

Even with the bye in round 10?
Yep.

I don't like these shoulder knocks Fyfe keeps getting. I see him as a Hird type, and Hird rarely managed 20 games a season. Throws his body around too much in marking contests.

I know BTG already has Fyfe in both comps so he clearly isn't afraid to back the new blood in if the form justifies it.

What do you mean all these shoulder knocks Fyfe has been getting? I can only recall him having one last week in which he had no shoulder strapping in his game against West Coast.

He got another knock during the West Coast game. I don't think that I could watch my player do that every week, too much angst.

Try have Dangerfield in your team, he invents ways to get injured. Whether it be running into posts or in tackles that look back breaking, he is very stressful to watch weekly when you are relying on him in your DT. :p

I missed the Fyfe knock (assume it was in the second half?) and haven't heard anything about it until now!

Fyfe looks like he'd break easy but the kid is tough, dislocated his shoulder and was back on the ground within 6 minutes against richmond.

Some players break like glass and others are tough as nails.

The players that struggle with injury and are still guns are fighting the pain.

Judd doesn't grimmace for nothing :p

Looks like LemmingMaster copped a doughnut in the backline. I guess we'll all need a headstart on him :)
