Cricket seems to have its share of these: Hansie Cronje (even at the time, I wasn't old enough to think that way but I remember thinking "wow that's pretty good timing for anyone else who was involved in corruption in cricket"), Bob Woolmer, Peter Roebuck... not really suspicious I suppose in the latter case, but with some pretty disturbing allegations against him, you might argue that he checked out at the right time. For Roebuck, the mystery is more what was he really getting up to and it felt like he was treated very favourably following his death considering the circumstances (he seemingly leapt from a window to avoid apprehension).

Rik Mayall is another off the top of my head. At his age, when a celebrity drops dead suddenly, I think we automatically default to "overdose or suicide?", sorry to say. From what I've read, it didn't appear to be either, no health issues, he was jogging and in pretty good nick for someone in his mid-50s, he just died all of a sudden.

The tragic death of rock and roll singer Bobby Fuller in Los Angeles in 1966 was very strange. His fame was rising after the massive hit 'I Fought the Law' by the Bobby Fuller Four, yet the talented young man with so much to live for was found dead from asphyxiation in a car outside his mother's house with an open can of gasoline. It was initially deemed a suicide, this later changed to accidental death, but questions persist over 50 years later.

Brittany Murphy died of pneumonia at 32. Her husband died 5 months later of the same thing!

This was an odd case. It was speculated that toxic mould have been a factor in the deaths of first Brittany Murphy and then her husband Simon Monjack just months later, but there was no evidence of mould at the house and in any case Brittany Murphy's mother was living at the property at the time of the deaths of her daughter and son-in-law, and should have at least showed signs of ill health too, which she did not.

There are cases of people dying shortly after the deaths of loved ones, deaths by broken heart so to say. Some examples sometimes quoted are Arthur Brough, the English actor from Are You Being Served who died in 1978 soon after the death of his wife. There was also the case of Scottish actor Mark McManus, who played Jim Taggart in the popular crime drama Taggart. McManus died in 1994 less than a year after his wife passed. While these cases were many years ago, more recently American actress and singer Debbie Reynolds died several days after the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher in 2016.

But Arthur Brough and Mark McManus were older, aged 72 and 59, and both men were in pretty poor health when their spouses died. Debbie Reynolds was 84 when she died, perhaps the shock of her daughter's passing was too much for the elderly lady? But Simon Monjack was just 40 when he died, so his passing was just as strange as that of his wife.

Tupac

Natalie Wood 'fell' overboard whilst boating with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken.

Natalie Wood was one of the three young stars of the iconic 1955 movie 'Rebel Without a Cause', and all three of them met with unhappy endings. James Dean died in a car accident in the year of the film's release, Sal Mineo was murdered in the 1970s and Natalie Wood drowned off Catalina Island in 1981.

Natalie Wood also met her end at the thing she was most afraid of - water. She is not the only Hollywood actress to suffer this fate. Linda Darnell reportedly was terrified of fire throughout her life which sadly lasted just 41 years. And how did Linda Darnell die? In a house fire in 1965.

Two relatively well known professional basketballers whom this would apply to were Bison Dele (formerly Brian Williams, played with a number of teams during the 90s and won a championship with the Bulls) and John Brisker (an ABA star in the 70s).

Both disappeared in mysterious circumstances: Dele after last being seen on a boating trip with his brother who is presumed to have killed him and who also died a couple of months later; while the most popular theory about Brisker is he became a mercenary in Uganda and was executed by firing squad when Idi Amin was removed from power. Both declared legally dead but never found.
