The year 2016 was infamous for celebrity deaths. Starting with singer Natalie Cole on January 1st and ending with George Michael, Carrie Fisher, her mother Debbie Reynolds and MASH actor William Christopher late in December, numerous famous people young, middle aged and old died in 2016 from various causes.

One famous person who passed away that year was Zsa Zsa Gabor, who died in December 2016 at the age of 99 just two months short of her century birthday in February 2017, the actress considerably outliving her older sister Magda and younger sister Eva both of whom died in the 1990s.

While Zsa Zsa Gabor narrowly missed making it to 100 years of age, which famous people did reach the milestone or are still alive today at over 100? Here are some:

KIRK DOUGLAS - Born 1916, the actor is still alive today at age 102.

OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND - Born in 1916, like Kirk Douglas this veteran actress is still living at 102. Her younger sister Joan Fontaine lived a long time too, dying aged 96 in 2013.

QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER - Born in 1900 when Queen Victoria was still alive, the Queen Mother lived until 2002 and died aged 101, outliving her youngest daughter Margaret in the process. I'm not sure, but I think the Queen Mother might have set some sort of record as a Dowager Queen, having been widowed for 50 years at the time of her death, King George VI dying in 1952.

ROSE FITZGERALD KENNEDY - The wife of Joseph Kennedy and matriarch of the Kennedy Clan, Rose was born in 1890 and died in 1995 aged 104. She outlived four of her children - Joe Jnr (1915-1944), John (1917-1963), Kathleen (1920-1948) and Robert (1925-1968).

BOB HOPE - The multi-talented American entertainer was born in 1903 and died in 2003 two months after turning 100.

Mr Burns' mother

If the Simpsons, which debuted in 1989 (discounting the previous short cartoons on the Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 and 1988) had aged its characters as time went by Homer and Marge would now be 68, Bart and his classmates 40, Lisa and her classmates 38, Maggie 30 and Mr. Burns 132.

Try to think The Simpsons ended with season 9.

Newton Chandler (19 September 1893 – 24 March 1997) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1919 through 1924.[1] He was a member of the Brunswick Football Club prior to being recruited to Carlton at the age of 19, but his debut for the team was delayed by the onset of World War I. He played a total of 69 games, including the 1921 VFL Grand Final, where his team lost to Richmond. After retiring from active competition in 1924, he served as the club's Secretary (1934–1939, 1956), Vice-President (1940–1943), and Treasurer (1944–1958). His long life — he lived to the age of 103 — and dedication to the club earned him the nickname "The Grand Old Man of Carlton".[2]

Australian actress Mary Ward isn't a big name, but she had a long TV career and appeared in shows such as A Country Practice, Blue Heelers, The Henderson Kids, Prisoner and The Damnation of Harvey McHugh among many others. I always remember her role in The Henderson Kids where she absolutely humiliated her grandson Trevor (the class nerd) by bringing his forgotten apple to school and then kissing him goodbye in front of the entire class.

Mary Ward's last credited role before retiring was her Blue Heelers role in 2000, and she remains alive today at the age of 105.
