Fans back Kane, players' award goes public
2:51:47 PM Mon 26 September, 2005
Port Adelaide Football Club
The supporters say Kane Cornes, the umpires say Warren Tredrea but it will be the coaches who have the final say on Saturday night when the Power holds its glamorous best-and-fairest function at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Six club awards will be presented including the John Cahill Medal for the best-and-fairest player, and for the first time the Fos Williams Players’ Choice award.
The night is the Power-version of the Brownlow Medal – full of glitz, celebration, and insightful footy talk – and the club is encouraging all its supporters to come along and be part of it.
Tredrea polled the most votes by a Port Adelaide player at the Brownlow count last week but a Power website poll has found more than 60% of supporters (from 2,000 votes) believe Cornes will win his first John Cahill Medal.
Cornes was runner-up to Tredrea in last year’s count, and has had another consistent year, which voting in the best-and-fairest aims to reward. The system works with all five Power coaches rating each player on a scale of 0-4 every week so a player can total anywhere between 0 and 20 votes per game.
Tredrea will be looking for medal no. 3. He is the only multiple winner to date. Or could the winner come from beyond that duo? Domenic Cassisi and Darryl Wakelin had very consistent years, Stuart Dew had his best year by far and Peter Burgoyne was often damaging in the midfield.
The Fos Williams Players’ Choice award will be presented and made public for the first time in 2005. The players vote for the winner based on ‘team’ qualities: leadership, selflessness, courage, professionalism, loyalty and sense of humour.
Past winners, which until now had been kept in-house, are Brayden Lyle (1997, 1999), Darren Mead (1998), Matthew Primus (2000 – 2002), Warren Tredrea (2003) and Michael Wilson (2004). The winners’ photos are displayed in the players’ lecture theatre as a constant reminder to the group.
The night will also recognize the club’s Most Improved Player, Best Team Man, Best First Year Player and Best Finals Player.
The Best Finals Player will be decided based on best-and-fairest voting in the two finals matches, while Best Team Man, Best First Year Player and Most Improved Player are decided upon by the match committee. All players are eligible to be Most Improved or Best Team Man however Best First Year Player is only open to those who made their AFL debut last year. They are: Ben Eckermann, Adam Thomson, Stephen Gilham and Danyle Pearce.
In what is sure to be a highlight of the night, Roger James and Jared Poulton will be honoured for their contributions to the Port Adelaide Football Club. Both players retired from football in 2004.
Coach Mark Williams and president Greg Boulton will make speeches, reflecting on the year gone and looking ahead to 2005.
Aside from the football, there will be entertainment from the Flaming Sambucas and a fabulous three course dinner for guests along with beer, wine and soft drinks.
For supporters interested in coming along, tickets are priced at $130, dress is formal, and bookings are essential through Rachelle at the club on 08 8447 9968 or emailing rlessue@pafc.com.au.
