I just checked out the fans poll on the club website concerning who should be the next captain. The results (so far):

Kane Johnson 27%
Mark Coughlan 24%
Joel Bowden 25%
Nathan Brown 10%
Matty Richardson 9%
Brad Ottens 6%

It doesn't say how many votes have been cast; but it seems pretty clear that there is no stand out choice. I couldn't imagine such a spread at any other time in our history.

What do you think?

(PS: I'm part of Coughers 24%)!

we should do the same with Mark Coughlan as west coast did with cousins and brisbane did with voss and make him captain while he is young, to give him some experience while we get our list together

When Cousins was appointed co-captain in 2001 he was 23 and begining his 6th AFL season. He became sole captain the following year. He'd been twice All-Australian.

Voss was in his 4th year in the AFL when he was appointed co-captain in 96. He had allready won the Brownlow, All-Australian and was twice Lions B+F. He was not appointed sole captain until Lynch stood down for the 2001 season. He was in his 8th season by then.

Coughlan has had one good season, never captained his state at junior level like the others and has never been All-Australian. He is a bright young talent but even Voss and Cousins went appointed sole captains at his age despite their better records. Coughlan is also a much quieter bloke that the other 2.

Johnson for a couple of years and then Coughlan.

conservative and boring

No cynical and pragmatic. The club has not bottomed out yet. There are still more years on the bottom of the ladder, much more pain to come yet. Let Johnson take the cuts for a year or 3, he has been around and can take the hits.

Then Coughlan can come in as captain of the new era in 3 years time.

Too early for Cogs..

But I know I will be ridiculed but what about Bowden.

I know only 1 good season etc etc.. But new challenges with a new coach etc etc.. Same could be said for Ottens.

Must remember that Johnson's only been here for 2 seasons. Would be the quickest appointed capt I can remember since Kernahan.

As much as Cogs is captain material, we don't want to put that much pressure on someone who is getting back into the team after a season of O.P, he has enough pressure just trying to get back into form/shape let alone captaining the lads at Punt Rd.

Give him a couple of seasons.

Peter Bell? Gavin Wanganeen? They were both much quicker!

Johnson for a couple of years and then Coughlan.

That seems the best solution in theory but in practise how could that work.

Johnson could well be playing career best football,he'd still be only 28 and he's seen us through the tough times.

Forward to March 2007.What do we say? "look our young guys are coming along well,Deledio is sensational and Franklin is on fire,we're going to challenge for the finals this year so thanks for seeing us through the tough times and coping the abuse for substandard stretches by our club but the Golden Boy is ready to take over the reins."

Maybe I'm being a bit "glass is half full" but I don't agree. The insipid performances of ours in the second half of this season reflected a team that had lost any inspiration from; and faith in the coaching panel.

Whoever the new coach was going to be, he was going to get an immediate 20% increase in output from the list simply by not being Danny.

Despite that, I do agree that we won't be viable flag contenders for a few years yet. However, a tilt at the finals is within grasp even next year.

I think my initial point is well made (no thanks to me): we cannot agree on the next skip!

I'd like to see Johnson captain for a year or two, and then handball it to Cogs. I don't think right now is the perfect time to give it to him, coming off his injury and not having played consecutive senior games for a while. Will be a great captain when given the opportunity though!

Johnson will be captain, Coughlan will be vice-captain. I don't want any pressure on Coughlan's shoulders next season, let him worry about getting his body right and getting his kicks on the footy field.
