I reckon a club should try to jag a sponsor that would stump up the cash to cover a couple of games a year, where the fans get to keep the ball when it goes into the crowd.

They have bins of them ready to go, so it wouldn't effect the game.

Even if they paid retail for the balls (which they wouldn't), at worst they'd lose probably 50 in a game? At $100 a pop it'd only cost the sponsor 5 large but I reckon for those games you'd bump the crowd numbers up a bit.

The game is just so deadset dull these days, it'd at least give the crowd something to get excited about.
Gil will try it if he thinks it will boost crowd numbers.

Don't they give out balls to kids after the game? I get they aren't match balls but are match balls really that exciting?

If you don't like the matches but want a Sherrin go buy a ruddy Sherrin without having to buy a ticket to maybe get a chance. It'd be nice if balls into the crowd were able to be kept such as in baseball (players will literally throw balls to the crowd) but that isn't the way.
I think a proper Sherrin is worth like up to $150 retail now.

I reckon initiatives like keeping balls are a great way to bring back the crowd.s I have also been pushing the idea of meat raffles to the AFL but we are working out some kinks with the royalties I would get before they implement the said meat raffles
Love it.
What about coin operated pool tables complete with racks of warped cues and one hollowed chalk per table behind the stands as well?

What about cheap pies?

Or 'away strips'?

What about this wacky idea - 'game day experience'!!?

I was at a Benalla Saints game a while back and a brand new pill ended up in the lake, even though it was the middle of winter i tried to get my 8 year old boy to retrieve it, but he wouldn't.

The ball ended up slowly drifting to the other side of the lake where a man and his young boy claimed it.

Idea sounds good in theory, but how long would it be before some drunken buffoon irons out a kid attempting to get the ball?

I reckon someone leaning over you to mark a footy is safer than a white cricket ball coming at your head at 150kms/hour.
I've often wondered how long it's going to be before a spectator is killed or seriously injured by a cricket ball, it's gonna happen one day.

I remember the old Vic Park days, if a ball cleared the netting it weren't coming back.
That reminds me of the late 80s. One Monday morning I had reason to be at AFL House, can't recall why, but I remember these police officers coming in with a list of people who were caught trying to make off with footies at matches. I was rather surprised by the length of the list. :)

Agreed. I sit in amazement watching the things some people do to catch the cricket ball. How we haven't seen a serious injury up to now is incredible. I recall years ago, a batsmen belting a 6 straight down the ground and this kid was sitting there daydreaming, not watching the game, and the ball landed in the seat next to him. Woke him up real quick :)

I think you have your TV tuned into the wrong channel if you think AFL is dull. I think you've accidentally tuned into the fireworks, fannies and fast car network, which is much duller than the AFL. All you need to do is go up ~3-4Hz until you hear the excitement-machine, Brian Taylor, going off his nut.
Wtf is wrong with fannies and fast cars????

Trying taking your family to the footy. See how much it costs. I'm just saying to the bloke who reckons the game is boring - spend the $150 on a Sherrin instead of.going to the game if that's all he wants.
