yeah-nah Woosha tried a fair bit but he was more on a par with our own Nick Maxwell. He battered people in tackles and bumps and had "awkward elbows" but he didn't actually scare people the way Lethal, Plugger and Pants did.
The pharmacist was pretty frightening... wasn't afraid to dish it out.

Tuddy was made of teak....players that ran into him got hurt (poor Peter McKenna:cry:) and Leeter Collier was legendary for his brutality. Only player to make Jack Dyer tremble.

Great thread.:thumbsu:

It's hard trying to chose 4 past players on positional importance to the need of our side in 2016 as well as adding genuine star quality from the past based on positional weakness.

1: McKenna; 874 Goals at an average of 4.6 per game. McKenna's average is on par with Dunstall and just behind Lockett (# one) in the top 9 greatest goal kickers of all time. Cloke to CHF.

2: Daicos; The wizard would add brilliance, accuracy and more goal scoring power to our forward line whether marking on the lead, crumbing or snagging them from the impossible angle. Also has the skill to impact in multiple positions all over the ground.

3: Buckley: We are sorely lacking a kick out specialist, obviously could play Mid, forward or back and star in just about every position on the ground. Apologies Morwood and Clement, who would also fill this need by providing a greater defensive aspect.

4: Millane; Adds quality, size leadership and mongrel. He is the enforcer the side currently lacks (Marley currently is the closest mongrel but is not in the same physical league whilst Grundy tries to find the right balance). Apologies Rowdy, super hard at the contest and could also play just about anywhere.

Seriously considered both of Len Thomson and Peter Moore in that order however that area is not of great concern with Grundy capable of being the # one ruck with Darcy Moore pinch hitting and Witts there as backup.

I'm not denying that....but plenty can dish it out (or could back then).....but very few made opposition players looking all around them in case they were there. Woosha didn't have that fear factor, he was tough yeah, but not as tough as Gavin Brown and Rowdy never went out of his way to start stuff.

If you mean into the current team to turn us into a premiership team not our best players over time:

Peter McKenna - full forward
Peter Daicos- small goal kicking forward
Graham Wright - quick wingman
Billy Picken- marking CHB
Haha, if someone has got a list of four without Bucks in it they need to start again...:)

Doug Hawkins, Greg Anderson, then Graeme Wright on the other wing, few more I probably can't remember - loved those one out battles on a wing!
Mainwarring, Bradley, Stretch, Winmar...so many. And that's just the wing. McGuane, Greg Williams. That brief period where Daicos, Ablett and the other Jackovich ruled the goal square. Kelly and Langdon... sigh

Leon Davis, Andrew Krakouer, Alan Didak and Nathan Buckley.

The first three because wee need our x factor back and Nathan Buckley because our midfield would be ******* awesome with him in it.

Oh and if I'm going to make a best 22.

B: Marley Williams ~ Nathan Brown ~ Mathew Scharenberg
HB: Leon Davis ~ Jon Marsh ~ Brayden Maynard

M: Scott Pendlebury ~ Nathan Buckley ~ Alan Didak
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Adam Treloar ~ Dane Swan

HF: Jamie Elliott ~ Travis Cloke ~ Jordan De Goey
F: Andrew Krakouer ~ Ben Reid ~ Darcy Moore

I/C: Steele Sidebottom ~ Alex Fasolo ~ Tom Langdon ~ James Aish

daicos, buckley, francis, mckenna

dunno where the discussion on tough players came from, but anyway.

plenty of players took on plugger, matthews, millane. doesnt mean they won.

grinter - didnt take plugger on, just pissed him off to the point where plugger said ENOUGH, pushed grinter to the ground, sat astride him and pressed, yes pressed, grinters skull into the turf. grinter curled up into the foetal position, praying for mercy. plugger got weeks. didnt punch him, just pressed.

still my favourite all time footy photo.

Guy Mckenna suggests otherwise and regards Worsfold's influence on the club, players and a game he played against Geelong when his knee was heavily strapped towards the end of his career was ahead of the 2 grand final victories Guy played for with the Eagles.

Max had his moments but was not in the Same league as the era didn't allow for it.

Like Hodge was similar to Worsfold however also played in a softened era, a general on the field and a ruthless leader of men who put the team first for the ultimate success of his side no matter what the cost.

even at an early stage both were better rucks than grundy, and just as important were decent forwards as well. they could mark and kick goals
quite regally at same age as grundy

Just an inkling on player toughness here....did anyone ever see anyone ever pick a fight with either Millane, Matthews or Lockett?
Certain players just make other players nervous!
Certainly Dipper never had a go at Millane, they played on each other but everyone just knew....you picked "the Raging Bull" at your own peril;)
Saw Steve Da Rui (Carlton) try and take on Millane at Waverley one day. Da Rui was built but Millane picked him up and slammed him into the ground and jumped on top of him. It was a brutal show of strength.

My 4:
Buckley, Daicos, Millane, Greening.

Why has no-one mentioned Dougy Barwick!

Doug Barwick
Anthony Rocca
Nathan Buckley
Ryan Lonie

Forget about inside 50's, we'll line em up from outside. N.B. May not be adding the needed endurance to go with the interchange cap next season, might switch out Ryan Lonie for Micky McGuane off the wing.

100% agree, but we only have 4 picks.

As stated it was hard to choose between players that were the best Vr's areas of the ground we could choose similar bests to fill areas of weakness.

I.e. Goal kicking accuracy, better foot skills all over the park and some genuine hardness were the areas for me most lacking to enhance the 2016 team in this fantasy scenario.

fair enough I just think moore snr is far better than witts grundy and moore jr in this pretend scenario at the same stage
